I embarrass myself in front of locals on a daily basis, but god am I bad with people who speak the languages I'm studying. I don't know why ;_:

I try to impress them but fall on my face xD

Examples:

*Playing Japanese game, taking a break from homework*

*Tile guy(I live in my parents house and our bathroom is getting re-done* who happens to be Japanese comes in*

Me: :X

Tile guy: ._.

*later*

Me: The bathroom is this way

Tile guy: Hai

*opens door*

*steps on dog poop untrained puppies left in room*

*Awkward silence*

When I went to France:

I'm carrying some heavy boxes to post, my dad is, too, but I'm trailing behind him on the path and it's getting harder to hold on to like, 5 heavy boxes

*Lady asks to help me in french*

*I freeze and forget how to respond correctly, and eventually reply in english which makes her be all like:  :I  *

......Socially awkward Australian

How am I going to live there(France or Japan),  If I mess up all the time? D:

Just keep using English and see what happens .

Lotta Japanese people can speak English. Unless you get a couple good teachers, you gotta bear with it, Kitty-senpai.

Learn not to mess up maybe? Our brains are like muscles; if they are used constantly they will grow and learn. Seems like basic advice, I know :P But sometimes the basics are all people need.

Peace!

Well I know that myself i am good in English but when i have to talk i still get nervous sometimes and when i was younger it was even more difficult. Basically you need to do what CaelumMare said.Maybe this advice helps you "to learn how to not mess up" because it helped me to get less nervous (i got it from a friend): try to include the language you want to learn or that you want to use more in everyday situations in some way or try to THINK in that language. Because when you think in that language your brain will learn to recognize it better and you get more confidence. But be careful sometimes it is difficult to re-switch to your mother language it happened more than one time that i answered something in English (which is my foreign language).

Don't mess up, simple enough. I'm the same way, hehehe I always get into these situations.

That's pretty normal, it's just lack of practice. :) it's not so serious though, just learn to calm yourself and try to get your point across one way or another. Smile alot and be nice and people will appreciate it no matter what you say (well, mostly). :D The same has happened to me soooo many times. I quess practicing is the only way, really.

It's still best to know the local language if you're going to live there.
