IGN is at Tokyo Game Show, and a pamphlet we were given shows just how much the gaming climate has changed (and continues to change) in Japan.
In short: there are more iOS and Android games being shown at Tokyo Game Show this year than literally every other platform combined. In fact, the numbers aren’t even close.
TGS 2014 exhibitors will show off 259 iOS games and 246 Android games, for a combined 505 titles. When you throw in the ambiguous "other smartphones" and "feature phone" categories, the number spikes to 559 games.
But what about everything else? Well...
Nintendo 3DS - 41 Games
Nintendo DS - 1 Game
Nintendo Wii - 3 Games
Nintendo Wii U - 13 Games
Microsoft Xbox 360 - 16 Games
Microsoft Xbox One - 24 Games
PC (+ Browser Games + Steam) - 93 Games
Sony PlayStation 3 - 43 Games
Sony PlayStation 4 - 42 Games
Sony PlayStation Portable - 5 Games
Sony PlayStation Vita - 34 Games
The total number of games on “traditional” handhelds and consoles? 310.
These numbers represent the continuing – and significant – shift in gaming culture occurring in Japan, one that’s becoming more one-sided as the years pass. As an example, there were 114 iOS games and 112 Android games shown at TGS in 2013.
Other notable numbers include the downward year-over-year shift in PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita games being shown (54 to 43 and 37 to 34, respectively), the nearly 100% increase of PlayStation 4 games being shown year-over-year (22 to 42), and the moderate year-over-year increase in Xbox One games (18 to 24).
As for Nintendo’s TGS showing? Wii, Wii U, and even DS will have more games shown this year than last (1 to 3, 7 to 13, and 0 to 1, respectively), while 3DS is down from last year, with 41 games being shown to last year’s 47.
