It all depends on how you view them. Crypton left them ambiguous, so you can make them what you will. I like them as lovers. I think it fits better.

Originally, they where supposed to be. But Crypton changed that once they saw what the fans were doing to their characters. I think they are kind of described as being like mirror images of each other. Just with different genders.
