So Why Isn't The Zelda Series That Popular In Japan?

Posted

I've wondered this for a long, long time. I just don't get it. How come the LoZ series isn't all that popular in Japan? I mean, you'd think that since the LoZ series is a Japanese game series it'd be more popular right? This doesn't bother me or anything. But I'm just a bit curious to why it isn't all that popular in Japan.

Zelda is VERY western in design. It's far more Tolkien than your traditional Japanese game of that style, so it appeals more to Western sensibilities

Well, true. It did have a bit more of a Western feel than it did Japanese. So I guess that makes sense. But still, I wish the Zelda games sold more in Japan than they do now.

Well like what's said above the Zelda franchise might have the most western appeal out of any Nintendo franchise alongside Metroid heck you could say it made the way for future western RPGs to follow it's footsteps from things that were established in games like Ocarina of Time(and I won't reply to anyone who'll start a debate of"Zelda is not an RPG" with me)Which is why you see such excitement and hype whenever a new Zelda game is announced but not so much in Japan

I really wish that the Japanese audience will open their mind more towards Zelda

Somethings stick in some countries, and not in others. Same goes with the variety of people, what matters not about how strong it is to the masses, but as long as you have passion and interest for the series/franchise or any media for that matter, it is loyal fans that can sometime get others to "look into" something down the line. Long story short do not let the bandwagon keep you from loving what you love.

Your sig made me remember Saint Seiya is also much more popular outside of Japan.

You could say the same about Metroid; they just have more of a western appeal to them, likely because both of them are based on genres that are popular over here (along with being inspired by stuff like Tolkien's works and the Alien film franchise in the first place). We love our action-intensive space / high fantasy games.

Add to this that Metroid was specifically inspired by the Aliens movie series

It is popular in Japan, just not that popular in the United States. It was more popular around the time of release about 30 years ago.
