It's literally been forever since I did anything pixel-art related, but I gave it a spin today:

He's a huge fan of both Dark Souls and Castlevania, so I figured why the hell not since his birthday is coming up in two days.  Thing is, I'm insecure as hell since I haven't done this in so long.  ;_;

For the record, this whole thing is scratch save for two things:

-The Skeletons are lifted directly from Symphony of the Night.  Considering skeleton enemies are something that both series share, it didn't really seem terribly unethical.

-The background is super scant since that's what I was most nervous about, so I simply dug up an ancient one from my HDD from a few years back and tweaked it some.

Sooo...some thoughts before I send it to him?  For the record, I'm posting this here since he couldn't give two shits about Kingdom Hearts.  :P  No fear of early leakage!

How about... We find your friend and make him give a shit about Kingdom Hearts and how awesome it is? xD

Other than that, I have no baseline 'rubric' for me to judge this picture off of, so no help here...

I can't really give any specific advice, but I can say this is great! :D I do a few sprite edits when I'm bored, but I can't imagine ever doing anything like this from scratch. xD

I like it... it could use a little more things in the background.... but other than that it looks great!

Just remembered Pitfall.
