i had a conversation with my sister about dlc. it had me thinking about it. she said that she hates dlc even if its done right (like nintendo is doing) because it add on content that you pay for in addition to what you already paid. i told her that if it worent for dlc then that content wouldent have happened at all and she said that she actually rather that content not exist then! i disagree but i have been thinking and i have come to understanding where she is comming from. i still disagree but i now understand.

first, the way dlc is advertised. even when the content doesent take away from the actual game and is actual add on content rather than a part of a game that was taken out and resold, you constantly see it. even in mario kart you see that there are more characters but you have to pay to get them. every time you go to the racer select screen in mario kart 8 you see that there is more content to the game that you bought but you have to pay extra for it. while the game itself IS complete, (as in the dlc is once again, actual add on content) the way it presents itself makes you feel like the game you bought isnt full, even though it is. i can understand that. the game IS complete, but when you see more content presented to constantly, it doesent feel like it. (especially is they are in blank spaces in the mario kart 8 selection screen) it really feels like you dont have the full game. now dont get me wrong. im not against DLC ( oh HELL NO!) I LOVE DLC! i actually do think of it as, again, actual add on content if its done right. (unlike some companies that take part of the coplete game out and resell in AS IF it is actual add on content. i freaking HATE that!) in fact, i have all mario kart 8 DLC and im planning on getting all hyrule warriors DLC because i think they are doing dlc right. actually adding to the already complete game. i LOVE that! i just understand why some people take issue with the way it is presented. while you ARE playing a full game, when your playing the game and your constantly being told " THERE IS MORE CONTENT TO THIS GAME! GO BUY IT!" theres no denying that for some people, it makes it feel like it isnt a complete game.

you might be asking "but how can they promote their dlc then? you cant ask them to not promote it." i understand. i dont think there is any way around it. i dont think that there is a universal solution because i WANT people to promote their add on content. otherwise people will miss out on it! i LOVE the idea of dlc (when its done right. again.) i just understand why people take issue with the way its presented. im not asking for change. i just wanted to share my thoughts on this. i wanted to share that i DO understand why its a negative for some people. i think its, again, a WONDERFUL thing! but i can understand why people think otherwise. again, im NOT saying that i know a way to change this. nor am i saying there is a better way to do dlc. (but if there is then by all means share with me. id love to hear! :)) im merely saying that i understand the disagreement.

what are your thoughts?

what are your thoughts?

especially when its a game i REALLY REALLY want but will praobly never be able to get and it has awsome dlc(cough, cough hyrule warriors, cough, cough)

Umm, could you ask your sister something for me? What about free DLC, the kind that you don't have to pay for. Like the Sonic Lost World DLC and in a way Mewtwo in Smash 4.

oh i asked her that. she is fine with that. i dont see much reason for anyone to be against that. xD thankfully we got both versions of smash so we get mewtwo for free. :)

Okay good, cause free DLC is just like a nice present that you are given on a special occasion. And yeah, I got both version of Smash as well, and even if Club Nintendo didn't give out the Mewtwo DLC or the Smash Soundtrack, I would have gotten both anyways because I'm a huge fan of Smash Bros. But I can kinda see where she is coming from on things like Hyrule Warriors. I just thought that I would be able to get the game and not have to worry about anything else, but I ended up having to pay $20 more to get the DLC when the game came out. Now I also think that if a game is going to have a lot of DLC, then they need to make it where there is sort of a season pass type deal where you can get them all in one whack and not worry about the money for each of them separately.

yeah. i agree. thankfully hyrule warriors and mario kart 8 has that. plus if you get it then your garenteed the next dlc pack when it comes out. :)

I like the concept of dlc,but since a lot of the time its done horribly, well I don't really like DLC in general. The Tales serie was almost ruined because of bad DLC,all the extra costume you'd usually get by doing sidequests are now DLC,but thankfully some games do it right like Hyrule Warriors and Mario kart 8.

I keep hearing "Nintendo does DLC right" and I have yet to see any examples of how they do it "better" than anybody else, and a lot of ways they do it worse. But mostly they just do it literally in the same way as other companies and somehow get a free pass for it.

I don't mind DLC; there's good DLC and there's bad DLC, and I have enough of both consumer savvy and self-restraint not to fall for the bad stuff. If there's story-based content that's released as DLC after a main game, then absolutely I am on board; if I liked the game, I probably liked the story, and a reason to jump back into that is just fine with me.

Okay. For a start. DLC is perfectly fine to have. As long as it is expanded upon from the base game and allows a reasonable amount of time to be played as. As this part, I'm talking about things like extra missions, maps to be played on multiplayer, etc. However, if you are going to charge for these, it should be a reasonable amount, no more than $3 should be the marketing price, in my opinion of course.

However you on the other end of the spectrum you have individual DLC, like playable characters, weapons, costumes, etc. These SHOULD NOT be priced at anything more than $0 as they are small and not really anything substantial like a map or a mission, they could just churn out multiple characters, within hours, maps or missions takes days, if not, months to make.

But. There are companies out there that are the shittiest of the shit. Capcom is a HUGE example, for Street Fighter x Tekken  I believe, they locked content THAT WAS ALREADY MADE on the game, to sell as Downloadable Content. This is a video ranting about that by AngryJoe, I recommend you watch it to get what I'm saying.

Microtransactions are also becoming increasingly scary, as more and more developers force it into their games, making it near impossible to play games without pumping money into these microtransactions. Gaming is becoming a more and more money orientated industry, which is proving to be the worse for wear for gamers and developers alike.

I like how CD Projekt Red is handling things.

Personally, I am an opponent of DLC, unless it's completely free, and even then I'm iffy on it. It's possible to make the content exist in game anyway, why should we pay extra for it? It's the thinking of "DLC is good" that is bringing rise to Freemium games that make anything incredibly dificult unless you pay. It's why a lot of people in the industry believe FTP is the future of gaming, and that is sad. Because the internet exists now in its current form, games can be chopped up in the little bits and sold to you individually, instead of just having the game after paying once and being able to enjoy it With all it's content. I already paid for my game, I want the whole damn thing, dammit! I don't want to go home and spend another 30 dollars on extra content, the game itself is already 60 dollars or more! You can say "you don't have to buy it", but who wants to play an incomplete game? If I buy a game, I want all the content. I want what I bought the game for, and what I bought the game for wasn't to pay for more content in game that isn't even a real item, I want to play my game.

The content could already be there. It should already be there. Unless it's done when the game has been out for a while, needs a little revamp, and its free, that is a little more OK, and that it's brand new content recently made, not just content locked behind walls. Few games do FTP right, like TF2. You don't have to get the items to play the game and win. And furthermore, if you do buy something, just something cheap, you can get just about everything for free through random drop chances, and that is exelent!

I hate dlc that's already in the game, and has you paying for the 65 kb unlock key

I don't like dlc like the one used in FF XIII-2. They made it to add more to the story with the "Requiem of the Goddess" dlc. Tales of Zestiria made a whole dlc side chapter for one of the characters, that's the type of dlc that I don't like. I hope that once the game is translated it comes with that side chapter instead of having it as dlc.

yeah. i know what you guys are saying. i completly understand why you feel that wy. and to an extent, i agree. i still love dlc, but i hate they way most companies do it. they take a part of a finihed game out and resell it to you as if it was adding to the game instead of charging you extra for what you already bought. thats the kind of dlc i think is bulls***. i dont think my thinking will lead to the rise of FTP and freemium games because those games revolve aroung you having to pay to get better and enjoy the game. wheras the kind of dlc i like, is adding on the the complete gme you got. kind like getting extra sprinkles on an already complete cupcake. if its not done like that, then im against it. so i understand how you feel. the way dlc is advertised makes you feel like you dont have a complete game. (and in some cases, you DO have a complete game when DLC is done the way i said. but the advertisements still make you FEEL like you dont have it) like i said, i DEFINETLY understand why this is frustrating! its jut that if dlc is done right, i feel like its ok because the game you payed for is still complete with nothing taken out of it and the dlc is just extra content. again, like the extra spinkles. capcom is giving us cupcakes without sprinkles and then selling the sprinkles for extra, while some companies give you the full caupcake with spinkles for regular price, and say "if you want then you could pay extra to get more spinkles in addition to the already complete cupcake you already have" thats what i like. but the feeling of incompletness that you get from games that even do it right, is still annoying. i just try to think of it as. "well, if it worent for dlc, then i wouldent get to have this content period". unless its cut from the already complete game (like MOST companies are doing now) ABSOLUTLY NO EXCUSES FOR THAT!!!!

I keep hearing "Nintendo does DLC right" and I have yet to see any examples of how they do it "better" than anybody else, and a lot of ways they do it worse. read my last post. most companies are doing it the way i hate while nintendo is doing it the way i actually like. youll understand when you read the post. :)

I personally think it depends on how it's handled. I mean, DLC costumes are annoying (Especially in the Ninja Storm series, since about half of the DLC costumes from Storm 3 were completely free in Storm Revolution and a re-release of the game made a couple months after that had the same price...), but something that adds a ton of game content for a decent price (MK8, Hyrule Warriors)? I'm all for that.

I don't see how Nintendo does it worse...

Mario Kart 8- $12 to add essentially another half-game in terms of tracks, 6 new characters, and a ton of new kart pieces? That's a steal.

Pikmin 3- $2-$3 for a couple missions, which are also playable in co-op and can be replayed to achieve an even higher score? I literally just got a PS3 half a year ago, so I'm not sure how companies outside of Nintendo do DLC, but that's pretty much what some other companies do, and I think it's worth it.

Hyrule Warriors- $20 for 4 MASSIVE packs of DLC that easily add tens of hours to a game that already has a ton of content, and a ton of new characters? The HW DLC is possibly better than the Mario Kart DLC.

Smash Bros- People who buy both versions of the game (Which most dedicated fans already planned to do since they both had very different game modes and stages) get a DLC character for free? That's amazing. The only problem is that people who don't get both will have to buy Mewtwo, and buying one character as DLC could seem to not be worth the money to some, but we don't know how much it's going to cost. It could be really cheap for all we know.

New Super Luigi U- Adds literally an entire game for $20. This is amazing DLC.

The 3DS games might not have the best deals for DLC (Fire Emblem Awakening seems to be a case of DLC gone overboard), but the Wii U has amazing deals in terms of DLC in first party games.

I don't see how Nintendo does it worse... Mario Kart 8- $12 to add essentially another half-game in terms of tracks, 6 new characters, and a ton of new kart pieces? That's a steal.

Plenty of other games do this, adding in characters, maps, etc, usually for a fairly budget price. And half of those characters were clones anyway, which is a cardinal sin amongst racing games. But this is what I would call them doing it "the same" as the competition".

Yeah, plenty of other companies do it this way too, it's nothing new.

Hyrule Warriors- $20 for 4 MASSIVE packs of DLC that easily add tens of hours to a game that already has a ton of content, and a ton of new characters? The HW DLC is possibly better than the Mario Kart DLC.

And again, something plenty of other games have and do. That's what DLC IS. It's not suddenly better just because it's Nintendo, they just happened to offer DLC people will lap up.

Smash Bros- People who buy both versions of the game (Which most dedicated fans already planned to do since they both had very different game modes and stages) get a DLC character for free? That's amazing. This is where I'm going to disagree. I'll revise my stance if Mewtwo is released as a purchasable character, but offering the one character that people beg for only if you have both systems AND both games? At a minimum, they have just sold you a $40 character. Precisely what I'm talking about.

New Super Luigi U- Adds literally an entire game for $20. This is amazing DLC.

For sure, although I'd basically consider it a separate game as is. But the inFamous series has been doing this for a few years too; it's a good deal, to be sure, but it's not new in any way. Standard market pricing. I'm not saying all DLC is bad; I would buy New Super Luigi U if I owned a Wii U just as I bought inFamous: Festival of Blood a few years ago, and inFamous First Light late last year.

The 3DS games might not have the best deals for DLC (Fire Emblem Awakening seems to be a case of DLC gone overboard), but the Wii U has amazing deals in terms of DLC in first party games.

All I have experience with this is Persona Q's DLC (which I haven't gotten because I've not started the game yet), but it's likewise often outrageous. Then again, Atlus in general prices those things obnoxiously, so it's unsurprising =P.Nintendo is pretty on the ball with their pricing, I'll give them that, but it's hardly cutting edge. They're doing DLC just like the rest of us, one track at a time.

Plenty of other games do this, adding in characters, maps, etc, usually for a fairly budget price. And half of those characters were clones anyway, which is a cardinal sin amongst racing games. But this is what I would call them doing it "the same" as the competition".

I agree about the clone characters being annoying, but the new ones (Link, Villager, Isabelle) are all welcome characters, and I really, really hope Nintendo will release more packs with better character choices soon.

And again, something plenty of other games have and do. That's what DLC IS. It's not suddenly better just because it's Nintendo, they just happened to offer DLC people will lap up.

I think the reason it's such a big deal that Nintendo's making these good decisions with DLC is because this is the first time they've actually focused on it, and they've been offering a lot of fantastic deals so far. It's not like other systems where DLC is kind of a mixed bag in terms of quality.

This is where I'm going to disagree. I'll revise my stance if Mewtwo is released as a purchasable character, but offering the one character that people beg for only if you have both systems AND both games? At a minimum, they have just sold you a $40 character. Precisely what I'm talking about.

I remember NoE pretty much hinted that Mewtwo will also be put up on the eShop, they just haven't mentioned it. I highly doubt he'd only be kept as a special reward for people who bought both versions, it's just that people who buy both get it for free. Also, like I said, most people I've seen who got both were the types of people who'd planned on getting both versions before Mewtwo was announced. I always wanted the game on both 3DS and Wii U, so Mewtwo was just a nice bonus.

In a way, it is a separate game, but I don't think it's the type of thing that could be sold at full price (Of course, for the Year of Luigi, it was sold in a physical copy for $30 as opposed to the usual $20. I got it for free with my Wii U and Mario U, so I can't talk much about its pricing). Nintendo marketed it as DLC, so it technically counts.

Nintendo is pretty on the ball with their pricing, I'll give them that, but it's hardly cutting edge. They're doing DLC just like the rest of us, one track at a time.

Like I said, I think it's just because they've been doing a great job with their first venture into DLC. I mentioned in my initial post that if DLC is done well, I'm happy with it, and Nintendo certainly isn't the only company that's made great DLC for a great price. It's just that they haven't slipped up much since they started releasing DLC (Aside from in games like Awakening, of course. I mean, I don't know much about the DLC, but it's something like $2-$3 for a single map from what I understand. Could be wrong there, but that's what I remember seeing).
