Meh, missed a couple of nice callbacks to earlier episodes, especially with bulma hitting on gohan. "I need an adult", " you are an adult" would have been fing hilarious. Overall, I would have rather them just continue to main story, but that's just me. Androids and gohan saved this episode though.

That joke was done to death in its first sitting, of course they're not going to repeat it again. Repeating the "in what regard", "Dodge", "Spirit Animal Crab", "Climb Down/Fly Up", and the callback to Vegeta's rage in the Frieza Saga when Trunks and Bulma were talking about the time machine were better choices because they were still fresh.

 

Also, TeamFourStar was highly requested to do this special by tons of fans and it took a lot of effort to do this on the part of KaiserNeko so I wouldn't be getting snooty about it.

Dodge has had more callbacks than any joke in abridged, Atleast with the Youre an adult they would have flipped the joke on its head, just like they did with dodge in this exact same specia, actually, they spent a lot of time flipping jokes, including having gohan hearing voices in his head like piccolo, so it was a missed opportunity. Wasn't being snooty, just prefered they continue the main story.

"Dodge" is a different subject. Its a staple joke that resonates better with any other joke in TFS's repertoire. "You're an adult" isn't even that funny, and it ran its course.

This honestly might be my favorite TFS work so far. Everything was well done, the jokes were funny, and they kept serious when they needed to be. It was definitely great!

 

Also, was this a non-canon special in the actual series? I don't remember the manga going into that much detail about the history of Trunks, but it's been a while since I read it.

This is actually pretty canon. Its based off a bonus manga chapter done by Toriyama during the Cell Games portion of the Cell arc called "Trunks The History - The Lone Warrior". The anime special is a lot different than the manga in that is longer, it expands on things the manga only briefly explored (like Gohan and Trunk's first fight agains the Androids and Trunk's fight with them three years after Gohan's death) and it adds in the plot point that Trunks couldn't go Super Saiyan until Gohan's death, whereas in the manga, he could go SSJ from the beginning. It was pretty much edited and expanded to be a much more dramatic version of an already dramatic story.
