As some of you may be aware, Square Enix is using visual motion capture to use in making the characters of FINAL FANTASY XV not only feel more alive, but personal. Square recently released a pdf of the presentation used at CEDEC 2015. It contains a ton of information on the visual works motion capture.

You can find the pdf here, however note it is in Japanese primarily.

and yet somehow the characters will still move like they've got metal rods jammed into their limbs during cutscenes

They used motion capture for the XIII series as well.

It's fun to see mo-cap in action. Hopefully the movements feel a lot more real than previous games. I never had that much of a problem with those older mo-caps, but I do see room for improvement, so hopefully this game will be one of the newer entries to push the envelope on that.

Interesting thing to note is that the animators themselves sometimes do the mo-caps =)

Yeah, they mentioned this in Inside the Square. I assume you've seen it?

I like how motion capture is helping evolve video game and movie animation. It's a much easier and less time-consuming process for the animators.
