You've been away for a while or something? I don't remember seeing you around recently xD

On topic, I think the film is great, but I talked about it with my mother a few minutes ago, and we came to realise that it lacks original ideas that Lucas had, it's just taking ideas from previous films and putting them in this one (except for a few things like the stormtrooper betrayal).

i heard it was basically "A Newer Hope"

granted maybe some familiarity was needed in order to win back over the fanbase after the prequel trilogy debacle. could that be considered taking the easy way out though? rather than accept the failings of the prequels and continue to push new ideas, they settle for pulling story lines right from the original trilogy.

i'll be finally going to see it next week but my expectations are low.

After watching it a second time, I can safely conclude that this film is great for rejuvenating the saga. The characters are (mostly) great, especially Finn who is just awesome. Obviously, they copied the formula of a New Hope, but they wanted to play it safe it seems after what the prequels were.

I love both Star Wars Originals and Prequels but I love the prequels more though. The Prequels were never a failure to me.

That's actually the best summary of the minds of Disney/LucasArts and the makers of Episodes 7-9. I couldn't agree any more so.

maybe not to you, but a good majority of those that saw the movies all seem to agree that they weren't that good. the point is, the backlash the prequels got was probably what caused this newer Star Wars movie to play it so safe.

I read those comments of those good majority who saw the prequels and most of those Star Wars fanboys complain some stupid reasons to hate on the Prequels.

i recently finished watching a lengthy review series that explained in detail the faults of the prequels. not saying your opinion is wrong but there are a number of legitimate criticisms for the prequels beyond the typical fanboy remarks. this is the case with many forms of media. nothing is without its flaws and the prequels are no exception.

It basically is.  Approach it from this mindset, and you'll do fine.

They really had to play it safe with Episode VII. If they deviated far too much from the original trilogy the older fanbase would have rioted. I'm in the boat that thinks Episode VII isn't a bad film. It was funny and the cast were great. Sure the story is a bit familiar, but I'd say judge the film properly when the credits roll for Episode IX. They've done the hard part and successfully brought Star Wars back, now they need Episode VIII and IX to push new ideas even more and give us a good solid trilogy. If Episode VIII takes too much inspiration from Empire then it will be disappointing and likewise for IX.

Episode VII was a solid Star Wars film and I feel the complaints were gonna be there regardless if it hadn't been "a bit too familiar".
