Kingdom Hearts χ[chi] - A look back, ahead, and a bunch of thanks

Posted

Today marks the second anniversary of my main account. If you remember reading my one year anniversary report one year ago, you’ll know I commented on the state of affairs in the game and how it’s evolved and changed. While I’ll do some commenting on that front, I’ll also use this time to take a look ahead to the last few months of Chi. This is not a solo endeavor, however. I encourage those of you who have played Chi, regardless of your interest level or dedication, to share your thoughts and memories of the game. Feel free to express your opinions in whatever way you like – screenshot, words, fan art, or anything else.

I had fun bringing this year’s edition together. The way this will be set up is that there will be 12 different screenshots (one for each month of the year, July 2015 through June 2016) in spoiler tabs with a brief thought or discussion following each. Because the section is so long (rip tl;drs) it is enclosed in a spoiler tab, so please click the spoiler tab below to start reading!

July 2015: Second Anniversary

In my previous report, we were not sure but hoped for an event similar to that of the first anniversary. What we got, rather, was a Moogle keyblade with a trade-in event for fancy rewards and no Second Anniversary Assist card :( This event also introduced us to the option to have the UI on or off, due to the high amounts of lag that players fought through to hit the RBs and Subs for those Gold Mog Points. While not up to my expectations (yay for moogle suit and not much else), it was three weeks of pure subjugation of heartless, low potion/ether stocks, and ranking nightmares. The perfect combination for an anniversary event, right?

August 2015: Smashing Watermelons and Exploding Fireworks (and the new mission menu)

Take the time to relax after that stressful anniversary - and beat up more heartless! Additionally, we did get a new menu setup with this, which was eventually tweaked to be the one that we use to this very day! While you may prefer the old menu style to the new menu style, everyone should feel better after actually getting the menu to work and then beating those heartless!

September 2015: MAX stats, high-powered Keyblades, and level 300.

By late September, I had almost spent a whole year working on ultimizing my Treasure Trove deck. There are certain moments in the game that I wouldn’t call “game-changing” but rather “stepping stones to success.” One of these triumphant moments in the game was MAXing my first deck. Many months were spent hoarding those Sids, the Moogles, and the FGMs (only SR, SR+ were too rare at this point), and finally, the first of many lineups to my deck was MAXed to the limit. Around the same time as MAXing my deck, I ascended from the 200 level to the 300 level, unlocking the ultimate hairstyle that I will probably never wear (clashes with the gummi helmet).

October 2015: Try not to get PSTD from the event monsters; or, the return of the Halloween event and Gummi pieces abound!

The best way this month can be wrapped up is as a return of two… well-loved… events. Players who have been around and participated in the events prior remember the first time they beat that big ghost or the hard pumpkin dude, or what they needed to place for that one avatar part. Maybe some of them even remember the paths they took for grinding of the drops (start in Mines 10 for my black gummi route for first anniversary, and make sure to swing by Mickey), or a certain room in Agrabah full of black gummi ships (guilty of that one). Events like these allow you to remember back to the event as it was for you in the past – gah the gummi hammer! or Yay the Sub plays Battleship Bravery! – and, in a way, relive the event by increasing the HP/def of the heartless to comparable levels. Now, however, you don’t have to waste 60 potions to try and beat one – it might only take one continue!

However, new memories can be made. October was when I started a new account to play with some of my friends from outside the KH community, and honestly I had a bunch of fun playing on an account that I didn’t care about what my ranking was or trying to clear all of the latest content, but I still had access to the knowledge on how to succeed and the best way to go about it. I’ve somehow managed to be on an A-rank team once or twice and had the awkward fight against one of my old teams one day (the new account was Anguis rather than Vulpeus), and even now, I still play on it occasionally when I need a break from beating a bazillion 666s.

November 2015: Keyblade missions, raise draw love, and laziness… I mean Second Anniversary

One of the events that I enjoy probably the most (barring the gummi ship events, those have a special place in my heart) are the ones that require you to beat certain heartless with a certain keyblade in a certain number of cards, turns, or continues, mostly because they reward you with fantastic costumes and fantastic items. Due to my pretty amazing RD luck for this event (RNG be praised!) I was able to net not only amazing cards but also a whole lot of mission clears. My only one-card clear of a 666 (to my knowledge) I had happened during this event (shame it occurred when I was still trying to complete the previous missions).  So, obviously, the developers knew to follow it up with one of my least-favorite events that requires you to use only one Keyblade if you want any chance of competing. In my opinion, obviously, the implementation of the gummi ship event a month prior was OK: the event had not occurred for more than a year and it was a pretty popular event. However, the Mog of Glory event, which had only just occurred three months prior, seemed like the developers were lacking in content so why not rehash this anniversary event?

December 2015: Yay Christmas! Yay beating trees and snowmen! Yay New Year! Screw Chip’s hiding spot though.

At this point, I may as well talk about the thrilling, enthralling, amazing and fascinating story of Chi. The thing is, my Japanese is close to nonexistent beyond some basic comprehension and reading. So while the Japanese players (or those of you fluent in Japanese) might be enjoying the storyline and understanding what is to happen next, I, simply put, make up the story while randomly clicking buttons, reading the little Japanese I know (Katakana is a lifesaver!) and getting the general gist of what I need to be doing. So then comes along this Chip mission. All I understand is I need to find Chip (the little piece of cupware dude in Beast’s Castle, not the rodent) somewhere in the west wing. Now normally you would probably talk with the other servants and learn that there are servant routes all around the halls, but being the Baka Gaijin that I am, I ignore them and wander around the west wing. After about a solid twenty minutes of searching for the piece of pottery, I consult with my resources – the KHI walkthrough thread and the KH13 forums, both of which offer no help. I complain in the team chat in Chi, and no one else is either awake or has found him or can speak English. By this time I need to head to class and clear my head and apologize profusely to the KH Chi team, but then when I was heading back from the larger west wing room to the smaller west wing room, I discover the room pretty much by accident.

This is up there with finding the handkerchief and the boxes of whatever they were in Wonderland. I wish I understood Japanese ;_;

January 2016: Welcome to a new year with a reskinned event that we just had last week, but with better costumes! Also the return of the Crystals of Light event.

I feel that the only thing I should mention here is the very large community aspect that Chi has. The reason I bring this up is because for my party, CutiePique PT, at around New Years, nearly each person celebrated New Years at a different hour. While this may be nothing new to you, considering we have people scattered on five different continents (no Australia, strangely), for most of the Japanese players, they were “おめでとう!”-ing (おめでとう = congrats) all at once, whereas we were all celebrating throughout the day and night. One event that we all managed to do, once the costumes were rewarded (see above for the dapper outfits!) we held a “dance” to which all CutiePique members were invited. Disregarding timezones, sleep, and potential LUX acquisition, we instead jammed together during 2 HR LUT, twirling in our fancy new outfits, removing our comfortable, normal getups for one night.

Honestly, when it comes to Chi, most of the stuff I screenshot (to be saved for all eternity) is the stuff that comes out of the mouths of my teammates. We’ve discussed Utada Hikaru’s return to the music scene (see my profile for more), Moogles as the true meaning of Christmas, maxing stats, sladem (read it backward), and honestly so much more.

February 2016: Love is in the air and in dark corridors and other cool stuff. And the return of Second Anniversary. Again.

I might as well explain the picture rather than explain my inner hatred for the tenth time of events repeating themselves. As in many games, the game gets more interesting, especially for the player, if the game starts to act in a strange manner. This can range from graphical errors (like the one seen above) to disconnects to cards appearing as different cards (not a joke, unfortunately). I don’t have the best internet connection and it has a tendency to disconnect or weaken to a point of being not useable. As such, these graphical errors definitely add to the game and its flavor sometimes. I saved the screenshot as “Lol standing in poison” and have equally interesting ones (one of them being a black Fountain Square Daybreak Town with the only light source being the Moogle shop entrance, with the title “The Door to the Light”). While it may be bad for the game to undergo these errors without refreshing, it at least gives the player a different type of levity and enjoyment of the game.

March 2016: VEXEN VEXEN VEXEN.

Pretty self-explanatory if I do say so myself.

April 2016: Chi goes RIP, UX goes live in North America, thanks for the memories!

As noted in the title for this section, April was the month where we got the news of the termination of Chi and the launch of UX in North America (on the same day, no less). With that to think about, plus a new game to start, it’s not really hard to see why many decided to leave this game and take a trip to UX. I guess the most important thing that I found in this month was the memories I had made of Chi in my time playing the game. I am not a month one player, I can assure you that, but my experiences of Chi were just as important as anyone else’s. Sure, I may not know of those first few months with no SR+s, no skills, no Ultimizations, but like every other player, I was a beginner, who eventually progressed into a master (at least I would like to think of myself as one) of the game. Each and every step I took to get to that point was important and worth thinking about, including my acquisition of Japanese, involving myself in the community, and logging in nearly every day, despite what the yesterday was like or the tomorrow I faced. Honestly, it was a bit overwhelming, so I decided rather than to start new memories of the game I loved so dearly, I would focus on the little time I had left with Chi and make memories that I would never, ever want to forget.

May 2016: Oh wait people are still playing this game lol: Introductions, conclusions, and new plans of action.

By the time May rolled around, most people had decided what path they wanted to take. Most of my team was still sticking around even if they were playing UX on the side. However, obviously, some of our objectives as a team had changed. No amount of idealizing what we were doing was sufficient for reality, as we were still playing a game that had winning and losing as factors in our team’s dimensions. Chi had not ended yet but sometimes we were playing like it had. Member sign-in was dropping in Chi and what was once a half-team weekly attendance had dropped to around eight (~1/4) or so. Sure, it might have been irl or school stuff getting in their way, but there was that part of me nagging inside that Chi’s termination was another factor into people’s login rate (which, I think, was a big factor). Losing, as shown in the screenshot, is nothing new to Chi players. We lose all the time. What we do afterwards is the key to how we reacted to the termination, a question familiar to anyone who has played Chi for any amount of time:

Would you like to continue?

Yes

No

June 2016: That was then; this is now.

I think the best response to the question posed at the end of the last section is best answered with this screenshot. Many of the members that are logging in every day and playing the game are still dedicated to it. They decided to continue with this game despite knowing that its termination is near. We’re still ranking, we’re still leveling (hope to be 400 before the termination!) and we’re still loving (with a good dosage of hate) the game. There’s something special about the game that pushes me to go forward even knowing that in a few months it will all be for nothing and the game will be gone. While I can’t point to one answer, I bet it has some combination of the team that I am on, the rewards from the missions, and my personal dedication to see this game through until the end. Like I said in the title, you can decide to play the game knowing that the termination is coming and do nothing in the game because it’ll be for naught, or you can play the game much like I do, focusing on the day and the future that the game has left!

July 2016 and onward!

As you Chi players may know, the Third Anniversary is rapidly approaching us. For those of you who are new to Chi and may not know what this event is, think of it as the game’s birthday and everyone’s invited to celebrate. Normally we get good handouts, like special cards and cool costumes, but the developers have been especially hard at work this year to give us a great final celebration to celebrate the end of Chi with! What exactly they have in store for us will be unveiled after the 7/7 maintenance.

Following that, we also have story updates for Daybreak Town in both July and August (and possibly a conclusion the last day of service, September 1st), so please do stay tuned for that! Hopefully you’ll have enough energy after the anniversary event is over to play through the story until the end.

Finally, there will (most likely) be weekly or biweekly events going on until the service terminates. No need to stop playing after anniversary (although some may feel that way lol)!

Depending on how things turn out, we may have some incentives to play other titles in the SE BRIDGE lineup, as there may be transfer goodies for you to put towards once Chi terminates.

For my final part of this, I wanted to provide a comprehensive list of folks that I really wanted to thank for their service to the community of Chi, both here on KH13 and on other various sites. These people have not only helped my understanding and development of the game but have made it more enjoyable, provoking thoughts and entertaining questions that may not have answers until Chi’s final day of service.

Before I get to individuals, I’d honestly just like to thank the Chi’s English community at large – chances are if you’re reading this, you are or have been a part of it. So thank you!

The list will go chronologically-ish to the best of my ability and recollection of folks. I’m only human so bear with me if there are some bumps along the way.

- THE_ECHO – The writer of the guide I used to set up my Yahoo! Japan account and to eventually make it to play Chi over two years ago. I don’t even think I’ve ever talked with you, good sir/madam, but thank you for making that guide. It’s one of the many resources I point people towards if they are interested in starting the game but can’t get past the Japanese to sign up for an account.

- ShardOfTruth (I think that was who it was) – I was lurking in a chatroom while watching someone play Kingdom Hearts II and they were talking about Chi. I remember them talking about it and that finally got me to actually sign up for an account. And, as they say, the rest is history!

- Friend of a friend – I began playing Chi but, see, there was this thing called Kanji and I didn’t know what quite to do. So I asked my friend (who knew a little bit of Japanese at the time) what a certain character meant and she sent it to a friend of a friend, and I got a reply back with a link to the English-translated mission list on KHI (turns out the Kanji was defeat lol). Thanks for handing me such a great resource!

- PTRAKIさん皆さんのPTRAKIさん、ありがとうございます。私は初心者でした。今も初心者思います。でもね私がPTRAKIさんに参加を感謝しています。だから、ありがとう。

- Kaoru – I don’t know what the likelihood of you seeing this is (considering you don’t really visit KH13 much anymore) but in all seriousness, dude, thank you for speaking English and for prompting me to make a KH13 account because 50 character limits are the best thing that ever happened to the game and I didn’t know quite how to PM in-game. Your guides were awesome for me to help me hone and strengthen my understanding of the game. It’s a shame you didn’t choose me to be your guilt target though :P Thanks for helping me through that beginner’s stage and explaining the stuff I didn’t know and what google translate wasn’t translating haha.

- Sky and soravids – Thanks to you lovely people on the KH Chi team for not only providing weekly updates (back when we had weekly updates!) but also for providing commentary on the events and, to especially Sky, for our conversations together in the “Show off Your Accomplishments” thread. Definitely would not have tried to up my game and actually become a part of KH13’s Chi team if you weren’t a member of this community. Best of luck to the both of you, wherever your travels make take you!

- Badger – Thanks for finding me a party to stick with for a little bit. You were my first friend, officially, in Chi, so even though we may be far apart, our hearts are always connected… or something like that xD. Thanks to you and your team, I was able to propel into my current team for more than a year. Hope life is treating you well and may you enjoy the pleasures of UX in all of its glorious English-ness.

- CutiePique PT – Wow, more than a year has passed since I joined your party. How time flies! This would be the place where I would say something of the effect “To many more!” but obviously with Chi’s shutdown, that can’t happen. Yes, UX is here and we’re all happy playing it, but Chi is the place where we all met, played, got frustrated, lost, won, Guilt Helped, strategized, BP supported, lagged, RD’ed, language exchanged, laughed, and ranked together. Honestly, I wouldn’t, couldn’t, have chosen a better team to do it on. Thanks for the memories everyone :) Even if we do go our separate ways, if we follow the hearts, then we’ll find the way (that’s something Master Aqua told me once). Whether we meet again in UX or not is beyond the point for right now; let’s do our best in these last few months!

Feel free to respond to share your comments as Chi terminates – your favorite moments of this last year, your thoughts for the future, anything and everything. This is a place you can think about what this year has been for you and how, perhaps, Chi has changed you throughout the years. If you like, feel free to share your screenshots of the game and maybe type a comment or two about your thoughts on it. While being respectful of the feelings that each of us have for the game, let’s remember Chi and let’s go out with a bang!

Sad to see this as KHX's last anniversary event. Honestly, the game was more fun than KHUX (totally honest here). However, the game was just too much for me to handle, so I took the lazy boring way and played KHUX (honestly lack motivation to play most of the time these days). I wish they brought KHX to NA on PC Browsers instead, because the game was so much fun. Hate to see them take it down.

I really hope you enjoy the final moments of KHX!

Though I only just started playing chi this year, I'm already in love with it. You don't have to pay to play and the card system is just so enjoyable (and a bit frustrating with trying to get the good SR+ cards in the moogle ticket draw...). I'm so glad that I will be able to be here for the third and last anniversary for Chi. Thank you kingdom hearts chi for all the wonderful memories you've given us! :)

My character (currently at the time of writing this)

Half way to maxing out my moogle keyblade

Vulpeus guild member (go team Vulpeus!!! :3 )

I love Kingdom hearts Chi, though it does give me pain that Chi is coming to end. i going to make most of it by playing the game until the end of services.
