Not if you had a Wii. Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower were all games that went under the radar, but from what I've seen, they all had pretty good reception. As someone that personally put hours and hours into Xenoblade, I'd say it was fantastic.

Generalizations are fun.

Let's hope our precious Kingdom Hearts 3 won't recieve any of this treatment. So far, so good.

Xenoblade was not under the radar. Matter of fact: once it was localised in Europe, it was the top selling Wii game at the time despite limited copies. Plus, once it reached America, the "I'm really feeling it!" phrase became a meme. Thank the heavens for Operation Rainfall. Those people are legends!

The Last Story and Pandora's Tower on the other hand were under the radar because they were both over-shadowed by Xenoblade Chronicles.

I really don't think that trailers indicate the level of upcoming DLC and Micro-transactions Kingdom Hearts III will have. Besides, this is Square Enix we're talking about here. They are the pioneers of the DLC and Micro-transaction culture.

Xenoblade was under the radar until Smash included Shulk, and even then, I don't think that many people played the game as a result of Shulk's inclusion. It was more well-known than the other two, but until Shulk was in Smash, I'd met very few people that knew what Xenoblade was. Project Rainfall helped a lot, but it still wasn't terribly well-known.

Also, the meme didn't start until it was used in Smash.

I honestly think that you are under-estimating the popularity of Xenoblade Chronicles before Smash. You see, the series is created by Tetsuya Takahashi. He was already renowned for creating Xenogears and Xenosaga. Plus, with Monolith Soft transferring all its shares from Bandai Namco to Nintendo, Monolith Soft's new project already had high anticipation as it was coming from a new Nintendo software subsidiary.

Sure, it may not have had the blowout of Fire Emblem Awakening, however, Xenoblade Chronicles won various accolades and was on the spotlight before the smash inclusion.

All of that led to popularity within the hardcore JRPG fan audience, but in general, it wasn't so well known. I might have just missed all the talk about it, but like I said, I only ever saw a handful of people that knew of the game's existence before Smash. I didn't even know about the Xeno games until I saw a random YouTube video mention Xenoblade.

Trust me, Operation Rainfall was a big deal. It was a prime example of Nintendo of America treating Xenoblade Chronicles like Sega does with Phantasy Star Online 2 and refusing to translate it outside of Japan. That's why the cast is composed of British actors: because Nintendo of America wanted nothing to do with Xenoblade Chronicles initially because they didn't have faith in the property at the time. It was only because of Europe's popularity and pestering by American Nintendo fans that it was released (and in limited copies might I add).

Tails, you forgot to add Retro games: Sonic Mania, Shovel Knight, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Undertale...

I know what all Operation Rainfall did for the game and the story behind that. I'm just saying that while it helped a lot, it still mainly focused on hardcore JRPG fans, and the limited stock didn't help a lot of other people try it out. Xenoblade was overshadowed by big-name RPGs on other systems like Final Fantasy and the Tales games, which is why I said it was under the radar. I admit that it's not nearly as obscure as Pandora's Tower and The Last Story, but I wouldn't say it was a game that got a ton of attention, either.

Aside Final Fantasy Tactics, I don't really recall any Tales games being available for the Nintendo Wii. But if you're speaking for all systems, at the time, Xenoblade was a new IP and to do as well as it did out of the gate with the cards stacked against its initial worldwide unveiling is telling to say the least. Xenoblade was not over-shadowed by those games, matter of fact, the JRPG formula was getting so stale at that time that Xenoblade western battle strategy reinvigorated the genre once again. That's how popular the game was pre-smash.

So... all generations, then?

Pretty sure the PlayStation 2/Gamecube/Xbox/Sega Dreamcast era did not have DLC and buggy releases.

YYeah, though then again the JRPG fans started getting a lot of good jrpg games around when the 7th gen was starting to die down. Like Ni no Kuni, the Tales Of games, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, ect. So 7th gen wasn't all that bad.

Generalizations are fun.

Yes they are lol.

Oh yeah, I sure did xD.

I completely agree with you Shulk. I really feel that Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those underrated games that deserve more attention. Though it did get more recognition when Shulk was confirmed for Smash 4. SO that at least helped people be more aware of the game and have other gamers wanting to try it out.

Pretty sure the PlayStation 2/Gamecube/Xbox/Sega Dreamcast era did not have DLC and buggy releases.

It did have DLC (an example) but add-on content has been a thing for years even before these in various forms; DLC's just the modern take.

As for buggy releases... yeah those were a thing too. People were actually worse off back then because, surprise surprise, they couldn't just push through optimization patches.

Interesting find, thanks for informing me about this. Come to think about it, the different chapters of the .hack// and .hack.G.U.// series had games that would be considered as DLC packages if they were released for PS3/PS4.
