I apologize if this has already been discussed but this has been bugging me from the beginning. Just who are the characters we play? Where did we come from before we showed up in Daybreak Town, were inducted into the Unions and given our Keyblades? Did we volunteer for the war, were we drafted, or were we kidnapped and brainwashed? I get that we're supposed to be playing Silent Protagonist player avatars but even most other characters of these kinds have some kind of backstory but we get zilch. Unless this has been answered in the Japanese versions of the game in which case this can be ignored.

Nope, no clue. I guess we're supposed to make it up ourselves.

It's up for the player's imagination. as long it fits with in the lore, it doesn't really matter what origin you give your character (unless they actually come up with one for us)

Nope, no given background. It's just up to your interpretation. I know logically it makes no sense, but it's Kingdom Hearts, people get spirited away out of nowhere with little warning every 5 minutes. Best to just roll with it.

 

I guess you could think of it as "those who were considered worthy were selected and gathered here" and since this is being told through the eyes of a fairy tale they just filtered through all the questions and anxiety the player may have had about being taken away from wherever home is for them. And of course, as we all know, parents in the KH universe are meant to be heard, not seen...and sometimes not even acknowledged at all in the slightest, so their feelings about their children mysteriously not being around anymore are inconsequential. And we thought Disney was terrible with how they treat parents, lol.

 

The way I like to think about how MY character is there, I'd like to think that at some point he was at least longing to do something bigger in his life. Whether he knew what a Keyblade was or not, he still felt the desire to go off on an adventure. His choice to participate in the war ultimately came from the dream and whatever decision he made after initial instruction. I'm sure he must have had issues about this at first and maybe had a moment of contemplation off-screen, but like any other KH character I'm sure that he brushed it off after a while and became more focused on the journey ahead, perhaps with some hope that he might return home one day.

 

So in a way by not giving you a direct explanation, you're given the freedom to make your own story, which I honestly like as it's the closest we may ever get to having all of our self-insert OC fan fiction fantasies actually come true.

We are what we interpret ourselves to be!  The post that most conveys this is Hero Of Light XIV's, as he makes an excellent point!  Sure, we're silent protagonists, but we're given the keys to create our own origins!  I hadn't thought of mine, though, and I hadn't really thought about how all of these Keyblade Wielders ended up gathered like this, but I can only assume that maybe this is something that has to do with our characters hearts and their connection to Kingdom Hearts, ya know? Whatever the case, this is an interesting question!

 

Huh, now it makes me want to come up with a story for my character!
