The original game constantly mentions the ancients being able to communicate with it, pretty sure Bugenhagen says the same thing. Sephiroth himself does it too during the temple of the ancients about how he gained wisdom from the lifestream.

we didn't even know that ancients can manipulate the entire lifestream until trilogy. especially considering that the lifestream got used by Sephiroth too
