If you are going with the excuse of Sora looking duller because he's older then you should also start with letting the story evolve of letting finality be a thing

all 3 of them should have stayed dead

they could expand to make kh about choices, based on how u do things= what ending u get

I would like some more consequences or finality to these things

KH3 was just "lets bring everyone back!"

Xion, Roxas and Namine had a finality to their characters in Days and KH2 that fit really well

if you really want that dynamic back it should at least be reversed this time around

What we do need is more consequences to just anything

what if during kh4 MoM used riku as a pawn somehow and made him and sora enemies

He spent 5 games repenting, we don't need to go through that again
