Sora may not be the main protagonist after KH3

Posted

So, everytime the future of the franchise is brought up everyone usually says

"It's been confirmed that Sora will be the main protagonist after KH3"

Most people will just trust that info and move on, but if you do some digging you'll find that the only piece of evidence backing this up is 1 article from Siliconera.

http://www.siliconera.com/2011/07/12/xehanorts-last-game-will-be-kingdom-hearts-iii-but-sora-will-still-be-the-series-protagonist/

That article came out 5 years ago, you know how outdated that is? xD He only began writing the scenario for KH3 in 2013, late 2013, CHRISTMAS 2013.

http://www.khinsider.com/news/Nomura-discusses-HD-2-5-ReMIX-KH3-chi-more-in-latest-Famitsu-3479

Nomura said he is currently writing the scenario for KINGDOM HEARTS III now.

He said that Sora would be the main hero of the future games 2 years before even writing the story of KH3. It's no longer a reliable piece of information and I don't buy into it anymore. Also, can we acknowledge the fact that Siliconera just listed things that Nomura 'said' rather than doing any type of formal introduction such as

"At this year's E3/TGS/PSX/Jump Festa, we spoke to Tetsuya Nomura...."

He more than likely changed his mind from then until now. Bad source, bad reference, bad article in general.

That doesn't change the fact that Nomura probably still intends for Sora to remain the main protagonist after KH3. Just because one article is 5 years old (what, so records of WWII aren't worth our time anymore because it took place almost 100 years ago?) doesn't mean that anything has changed. Sure, relying on just one source alone to say that Sora will remain the main protagonist isn't as strong of an argument, but the same can be said for saying that Nomura changed his mind just based on the fact alone that you don't trust Silioconeria. The fact is, we don't know what the future holds. We may have to wait for Nomura to be asked that kind of question again in the future, but if you ask me it really feels like the intent of the series is to keep Sora as the main protagonist. There may be titles that focus on other characters or even new ones from time to time, but it always has a tendency to return to Sora in the end. Maybe that will change too, maybe Nomura will want to continue the next few titles through the eyes of a new character, but I highly doubt he would stay away from Sora forever. It just doesn't feel like a logical conclusion that because one source that said this is unreliable, the idea of Sora ever remaining the main protagonist must be false. It's just way too dismissive. We don't properly know anything yet, but all I'm saying is never say never.

Why are you comparing WW2 documents to unreliable information about a video game? That's not a good comparison. The rest is your opinion so I can't be mad.

Well, I believe Sora will continue onward in the series after the Xehanort Saga ends, but will there also be new protagonists coming aboard?  Yes, I believe so!  I mean, you can still have Sora be an important character in the series while bringing over fresh new faces, ya know?

But well, if Nomura is asked upon this subject, I'm sure whatever his answer is, it'll be interesting! :3

Let's hope he is asked soon.

Let's hope he is asked soon.

Indeed!  Because it's not about the wrong answer, it's about the right question! :3

As a writer, I can tell you that it is possible that Nomura had the basic idea of KH3 in mind long before he started working on the game.  When he starts writing it, he's writing all the details, but he has a general idea of where the story is going.  And just because things in the story are random and confusing doesn't mean Nomura has no idea what's going on.  Sometimes you come up with an idea.  You think "Oh, this is cool" and you find a way to work it into the story.  Nomura is a genius at that.  That doesn't mean this is actually the case, but it's possible.

I disagree but I digress. It's all a matter of perspective.

A bit late on this, but.. KH3 actually began development in 2010, so I'd hope that the story was being developed near that time as well.

A bit more on topic: I think it'd be cool if Sora wasn't necessarily the main protagonist anymore after KH3, but he still helps others out as they face evil. (Either guiding, or joining the battlefield)

EDIT: That Siliconera article is 100% accurate. http://kh13.com/news/20391-nomura-discusses-kh3d-and-kingdom-hearts-iii
