Hey everybody i was just talking .:Cricket:. one of the sites moderators and i asked her what she thought about starting a monthly video contest on this site for members like me who like making amvs .:Cricket:. said she liked it but what do all of the members think should we start a monthly contest for amv makers

Featured Replies

We have tried that a few times in the past to hold various video contests, but most of the time, not enough people joined.

There are different programs people use, and different editing levels used, and while normally someone would join for the fun of it some people were set back because of the difference there is in video editing. We could do a separate category for the two, but then comes another issue of if there's enough people or not to do that.

But I still like the contests, it's just a matter of people joining or not.

KaiSo pretty much summed it up. Not enough people'd join, and not everyone has the right editing software. I would've liked to join the KH13 AMV contest, but I have WMM.

well i know a tone of people who would love to join a contest for kingdom hearts amv's and they all only us sony vegas and window's movie maker i'm shore if me and a few other member spread the word on youtube to other we know who would join i'm shore we could make it work and for separating different movie makers is easy just get the people who post to tell u what they use and if they dont i can tell different movie makers apart no bother so that would help with that so now what ya think

gather them first, then we can do a tournament / contest.

okay i'll get all i can and i'll ask a few other members if they can give me a hand

I'm not good at editing videos and like Kaiso said, not enough people would join :P

That would be a good idea.

I also think that there should be themes for each contest. Like a music video or a parody. Having people submit random videos that they create will be a bit hard to judge fairly so having them fit a category would make it easier for everyone.

I know this is a KH site but having a KH related video every month can be a bit repetitive. Say after three months, there will be one month where it doesn't have to be KH related.

And what are the rewards? I know you get the fun of making the vid (hopefully) and the enjoyment of winning, but for some people that isn't enough. If there isn't a decent award then people wouldn't be likely to join as often.

I'll put one together again, but this time i want people to commit to it first, so gather em up. I'm tired of waiting for people to join and only getting three of them to make videos at all.

though id do it so that you have to make a new video, not use one thats five months old, that way its no as repetitive since there could be things like themes and such, would that help fred?

rewards could be things like graphics.

I would join if we could submit vids less than 1 minute long. owo I honestly don't think I could make anything longer, atm.
i'd say 45 secs + would be fair, unless we gave like a month to do each vid, which would cause more people to lose interest and not turn it in at all. xD

Aaron's was the best.

Too bad no one was joining.

Don't edit my posts.

That would work for meh~ xD

just letting u know i was spreading the word on youtube last night got around to people so far just waiting for more to reply back

.... We'd prefer people to join the contest if they're Active members of this website, not strangers. o-o...

Plus, spamming people about it is not going to get them to join. In fact its probably going to discourage them from even visiting the site, let alone joining the contest.

ya but i know a few people who know this site and use it to get video clips and stuff so if we got them to join and hey what if i made a video to put on youtube to show off the idea it will show off the site and let people know about the contest so what ya think

I like this idea. It's like putting our AMV maikings skills to the test.If this comes to be,then sign me up and I'll do my best.

Spamming people to join isn't very good though.xD But besides that.I like the idea.

Like Kaiso said, it should be active members, not strangers :P

I would join this. And btw, you don't need Vegas to make good AMVs or videos. Several people, including myself, make AMVs using WMM, and they come out great.

If people don't have WMM, and they have Vegas, or vice versa, maybe the contest could be separated into two different classes (if enough people join)

One contest for people with Vegas, one contest for people with WMM.

ya i'm with sk3 about how u dont need sony vegas to make good vids like look at me i use wmm and i think my vids come out really good i'm doing better on youtube then some people i know who do use sony vegas goes to show affects arent everything

Y'know, you dont NEED Sony Vegas or After Effects to make good videos. Heck, my last WMM vid has 2,000+ views while my SV ones have <100.

Views don't mean anything.

Effects and transitions are very important. Without them, its just clips. Which gets boring.

WMM also compresses your videos quality, Sony Vegas enhances it.

We aren't talking about technical quality. Of course Vegas beats WMM when it comes to overall quality and effects.

We are just saying that people can make decent videos using WMM if they don't have Vegas..

No, no. Proper use of effects is important. If you have the effects, you use them to your advantage. If you don't, you use timing and simple transitions to your advantage. Sometimes simplicity is bliss, and is often highly overlooked. Some people who do own Sony don't know how to properly use the program to their advantage, so the effects they choose to use aren't taken to their full potential, and can look badly effect-whored (the generic term xD). There's another version of effect-whoring, but it's usually when someone has properly used many effects at their greatest advantage. However, a simple coloring effect can make a simplistic video that only has transitions have more of an effect than a video that uses 5 different effects at once.

What really matters is if your video tells a story when it needs to be told. Does the underlined meaning of the video show within the editing and choices of the clips you used? Do you even have proper clip choices? Do they match the song choice if given? Was your timing right at a specific moment in the video? Does your video have nice flow, do the clips nicely come in one after another and make sense? Was an effect you used necessary if it was even needed at all? Those things matter. Even if you don't have effects within the video if you edit a video and it gives viewers more of an impact, there is absolutely no need for any effects.

However, certain songs are better for less effects than others. Slow, dramatc songs are usually the ones that don't have as many effects, while fast-paced songs usually tend to contain some, or many effects. If an editor has the ability to use the effects, and feels there is a need for an effect, then they should use it where they feel it's being fit. It also depends on the editor, their style, and their experience.

Views don't necessarily make an editor either. The only reason why my WMM videos have more views is because they're older than my vegas ones. Someone can have 5,000 views on one or two videos, and that still doesn't necessarily mean they're an outstanding editor. Also, youtube's subscriber system doesn't necessarily make an editor great too. It just could mean they're more known out there than others.

My two cents: Back in the day, I used to make AMVs. All of mine were complete shit, yet one of them got up to 170,000 views. In conclusion, views mean nothing regarding the AMV, but generally just reflect the popularity of the song.
