Posted January 3, 20178 yr Anyone watch this masterpiece?? OH MY GOD IT WAS BEAUTIFULLLL surprised to not see a post about it on here. discuss the movie/praise for the movie down below
January 3, 20178 yr Watched it on a plane, kinda regretted that though because it was a beautiful masterpiece deserving of a theatrical or home TV watch. But I couldn't wait given all the hype the movie had in Japan. I remember when I first watched "Voices from a Distant Star", I wasn't really impressed with Makoto Shinkai, but I gave him a second chance will all this hype for "your name" and loved "The Garden of Words" (stunning imagery and powerful prose) and "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" (very Ghibli-esque). Loved the plot twist in "your name", fitting ending too. Can't wait to see this released on Western soil on a grander scale. RADWIMPS' soundtrack flowed pretty nicely with the movie as well.

Yeah, it was a beatiful anime! If you liked 'Your name' you should definitely watch all the other animated films/shorts done by Makoto Shinkai as many of them are both beautiful in terms of artwork/animation and the story.
January 4, 20178 yr I saw it and I think it's overrated. Don't get me wrong, the visuals and music were beyond stunning, yes. But the story didn't do so well. Personally I checked it out because of the idea of switching between bodies interested me. I wanted to see how the characters would build their relationship and make it work through that. That's not what I got. Instead, the characters suddenly decide they have feelings for each other after a rushed montage of their lives while the switch is happening. Their love for each other never got established so the romance was all rushed in order to get to the big twist, which is, admitedly, a very good twist. Even so, it fails as a romance movie because the characters never showed any chemistry. The only reason you want them to end up together is because they go to crazy lengths in order to meet each other, and after seeing all of that you kind of want them to be together so the movie can end. What really bothered me about the movie though was the ending. I HATE the ending. It's the big climax, and it's finally time to see the female character show off her character development and talk to her dad and...It cuts. It cuts the most important moment of the movie to go to the ending. At that point the film failed for me. It never established a believable relationship between the characters because it was rushed, and it failed to show their character development because it gets cut for more beautiful visuals. So overall I just found it...Decent at best. Masterpiece is an overstatement for me but maybe it's because I expected the idea to be executed differently. I thought it would be an interesting way to develop the relationship of the two characters, but it is instead used to develop the story, which is not a great story since it cuts everything it was building up, making it pretty pointless in the end. I love the music and visuals, they are incredible, but I dislike almost everything else.

I love the music and visuals, they are incredible, but I dislike almost everything else. you can read it now, finished editing it Maybe overrated for you, but I personally am not an anime watcher, I've watched mainstream anime movies like ghibli movies and akira, but I haven't delved into the whole thing. So for me this was completely new, and boy did I get more than I expected ( I only watched the trailer, didn't read reviews or look into it more before actually watching the film). Ive never seen a movie like this in my life And I did get a sense of their romance. Personally that montage with them being in each others bodies and talking to each other, writing notes, arguing and teasing was enough to build a believable love relationship. That montage part was great chemistry in my opinion. They began to know about each other, they wanted to meet each other. Now that you mention it, it was faced paced, but while watching the movie it totally worked for me, and I believed their love for each other. As for the father part, I never really go into that character and relationship, so when that part was cut, I wasn't at all bummed. I don't know, I never felt like it was a big focal point of the movie, I just felt it was a great add to her story and struggle and stuff, but not really what I was invested in. I was invested in her survival, along with her friends, characters I actually liked, and invested in Taki and Mitsuha being together. I liked that they cut, cause for me, it left it a mystery if any of them ever survived!! So I was still invested until the very end. And when I found out they did survive, I was super happy! I didn't at all feel cheated not seeing the scene between the father and daughter, I knew she was able to save the village and that was enough. I know it sounds bad but I really didn't care about the father daughter relationship. So although looking back, things do seem fast paced, the relationships between taki and Mitsuha and all their friends felt well executed to me, and I had no problem with the father daughter relationship ambiguity at the end. someone please post their thoughts too, I wanna hear other opinions! I thought it was okay any explanation as to why? Edited January 4, 20178 yr by LostArtis
January 4, 20178 yr any explanation as to why? I liked the movie, but it was lacking in some areas like how or why the switching happens. I think the grandmother said something similar happened to her and then it was completely forgotten. I mean they probably could have fixed all of those if it was an anime.

Oh my god, I almost forgot about that!!! that was super interesting. LOL I'm like thinking now. Idk if making that all a mystery is a good or bad thing for me yet, lol. Totally get where you're coming from, thanks! and it would be cool if there was a series on the mythos or whatever of that universe!

Lol, I haven't seen a lot of anime movies either. Only some Studio Ghibli ones and Garden of Words. And since I also just watched the trailer and got interested, we're pretty much on the same position. I would agree with you about the montage being enough to build a believeable relationship...But it makes no sense because their interest for one another was NEVER shown. They go throw the rushed montage and suddenly they have feelings for each other. If they showed how the switch had them grow more interested in each other and how their outlooks changed from what they originally were, then I would believe they had feelings for each other. But no. Taki always had feelings for the senpai till he suddenly decided he didn't, and Mitsuha never showed any interest in having a relationship, since her priority was moving to the big city, yet suddenly she is in love. There is no transition showing how their feelings for each other developed, they only show a rushed sequence of them messing with each other's lives and arguing. And everyone knows that when you always argue with one another, it is true love. So in the end, no. I don't believe they have a believable relationship because from what we know about the two characters, they had completely other things in mind, and while the switch was happening, those thoughts never changed, so their love for each other is never truly established. I also like what you say about being invested and wondering about their survival till the end, and I would agree with you about the father-daughter relationship not being as important if there wasn't one solitary fact. They were building up to that scene throughout the entire movie! They constantly show how Mitsuha has trouble speaking to her father and is always afraid to talk back to him, so you expect by the end to have her little adventure make her stronger and have her be able to finally face him. But they cut it and it's wrong because it was a REALLY important scene. This is what her character development was supposed to be about. This was the final confortation which would save the town. I mean which sounds a better scene to wrap up the climax? The main lead putting all their development to the test, confronting their fears and putting the thoughts they have been holding back to words which ultimately save the entire town...Or a minute of extra worrying over the characters' survival? I know I would want to see the former. So I do feel cheated. I feel like they focused too much on unecessary drama instead of developing things that were far more important, like the relationship of the two leads and the resolution of Mitsuha's character. I think I wouldn't mind that much if the characters themselves were uninteresting, but they weren't. They were fun and interesting characters and I wanted to see them engage in a believable relationship, I wanted to see them get through all the drama, I wanted to see them grow as characters, I wanted to see how they would resolve their issues. But no. We get a rushed relationship which makes no sense, we get TOO much focus on drama which I personally don't find interesting, and despite having character development it is never put into action so it comes off as pointless by the end. That's why the movie fails for me. That's why I don't think this is a good movie.

That's why the movie fails for me. That's why I don't think this is a good movie. I should've been more clear, I also meant anime in general. But forget this point lol I still think it was believable. Mitsuha showed signs of interest in a relationship, as I recall, after the date thing, when she looked in the mirror and said something in the lines of "they're lucky, I wish I were like them" speaking of taki and senpai. She clearly gained interest in him since she left to tokyo to try to meet him, had her hair cut to look good for him and stuff. As for Taki, the senpai seemed more like a crush to me, more of a she's hot kinda thing, I didn't feel his interest in her to go any further than that at all. During the whole trip thing too, I did get a sense of taki losing interest in senpai. I saw the transition, the long period of time without Mitsuha, he decided to meet her and went on a long ass trip to find her just from freaking drawings! maybe he didn't even realize it just yet, but he definitely loved her! And that love grew even more intense when he figured out she 'died.' He didn't firetrucking give up! I guess it's harder to portray growing love interest between people when they literally have no screen time actually together side by side until the love is revealed, but I still definitely sensed it. And it was a deeper kind of love, the not superficial one. One like when you start falling in love with a friend, and start finding them attractive even though initially you didn't think so (yikes lol). at least that's how I felt. Also, I don't think they were building up to that scene at all!!! the father daughter relationship was not brought up 'constantly.' I recall there being only one other scene between the daughter and father, and it was with Taki in her body!! I still don't see how you saw that as important! I honestly saw the father being an obstacle more than anything! The buildup I saw was a buildup of an obstacle , not a relationship! No investment in that relationship whatsoever, I didn't care. The one thing I will say however, is that since they survived, it is implied anyway that she did face her father! There was even that ' big door slam, coming in serious, everyone looking at her' scene before it cut. I think that was enough to show how much she grew! a final unrelated statement, one of the reasons I loved this film is it kept me interested the entire film, it never dragged, even at the slower parts I never felt bored! sorry you weren't able to enjoy it, I guess we got different tastes. January 7, 20178 yr Managed to see it on the big screen when it came to Ireland for a one night only screening back in November. I honestly loved it and I can't wait to see t again when it comes out on Blu-ray. It's quite possibly one of the most beautiful animated films I've seen. The soundtrack was great. I really liked the characters and the pacing of the story never dragged for me. Honestly it was easily in my top 3 animated films of 2016. Edited January 7, 20178 yr by KHSoraKeyBlade
