Once Upon A Time -- General Discussion

Posted

Hey there everyone, how's it going!? So then, I wanted to talk to you all about a show I've been watching for years now, and I'm sure it's a show a good many of you have watched as well! And I'm talking about...

Once_Upon_a_Time_title_card.jpg

Now, for all those who know about this show, which is a story that mixes in various different Grim and Disney characters together in a darker setting, right now it's in its sixth season! Now, the show is very good, and I've loved it from the get go, but apparently, the ratings for the show haven't been the best for a while now, thus many are fearing that the show will be cancelled!

Now, right now, at where the story is currently standing at, everything is leading up to the point of the "Final Battle" as the Black Fairy says. Now, the way things are building up, especially with Emma and Hook engaged, I think that it's safe to say that this season should be the show's last. We've gotten to a point where the most important characters have gotten their stories told, and right now, after the Black Fairy, I really don't see what other mighty villain can be put to surpass her, since she's apparently the source of all Black Magic, ya know? So honestly, I think the show should end on a high note with this season, as I think that it's going to, with Emma and Hook's wedding being the "Happily Ever After" so to speak! I would much prefer the series ends now then for it to decline in popularity and get cancelled, because let me tell you, I've invested many years of my life on these characters, so I really don't want to see their stories unfinished!

But what about all of you? Do you, like me, think the show should end with this season? Or do you think it should continue?

The reset idea is terrible, and everyone involved should feel bad.  That's like when The X-Files cast new people in season nine, and got canned as quickly as possible due to a steady ratings drop. I

  • I agree.  This feels like it would be kinda like Being Human UK, when the main cast started leaving the show in the third season, instead of ending it, they got a new cast and it was terrible.

I'd rather see it be cancelled than rebooted: it never works, and it certainly won't work on a show with six seasons of pre-set mythology

I always take statements that are not from proven official sources with a grain of salt and I've responded to the tweet asking for their source.

EDIT: I got an instant response. Apparently, Emilie announced it on Instagram. I'm not on Instagram so I can neither confirm nor deny this.

What was the "hook dying in season 4" thing?

Well crap.

Oh, some nonsense a fan started that Hook was going to fight Elsa, who was evil, like the original draft of Frozen, and die to save Emma.

Wow. That might have actually been better than his Buffy rip off death in season 5.

Essentially that role was actually adapted but with The Snow Queen rather than Elsa and I thought she was rather cheesy.

She was, but it was kinda interesting that Elsa and the original Snow Queen exist as different people, like the separate stories are different universes.

Yeah, but now Captain Swan wedding for season 6, with Hook dead.

I concur. I was intrigued as well by their having both characters co-exist and I believe Hook would have been brought back just the same as he was in season 5, he's too popular.

I'm sort of biased there: Hook's one of my favorites. A cheap death would've pissed me off a bit.

And speaking of things existing in different universes... does OUAT imply a lot of Disney's films don't exist? Sword in The Stone is canon, but Emma would've wondered how her mother and father were cartoons from a kids flick.

I guess if they're in the Enchanted Forest, that particular film doesn't exist in the OUAT universe.

Interesting question, it would be most sensible if Disney films didn't exist in OUAT since their stories are implied to be unknown outside Storybrook.

Neither would their original texts which are far more morbid.

Ex. - Sleeping Beauty is raped while in her enchanted sleep and impregnated with twins.

      - Neverland is actually Heaven, hence age not existing.

      - Snow White was 7 years old.

Since such events/concepts are nowhere near accurate in OUAT, who the hell would see them that way?

Maybe there's a really messed up alternate Enchanted Forest where those versions occur?

And if Frozen existed in OUAT, that would've bit a big tip off for everyone on what to expect. But don't they mention Emma know's a lot of the fairy tales beforehand? That seems to mean they do exist, in some form, but not the truthful versions from the Book.

Now that would be kinda awesome. I'd be interested in that as a reset concept.

I was just thinking that might be so but it's been years since I've seen the first season.

It'd have to be TV MA for some of the originals, with all the sex, gore, and mayhem. Maybe OUAT meets Game of Thrones?

I think they did...I've rewatched season one recently, and Emma seems to know about "fairy tales" so I'd assume they exist in some way.

So then the question is where do the authors of the fairy tales get the stories from? It can't be a coincidence that they wrote true stories they had no idea were true.

There's nothing canon, but I made a theory for it, off a book series with a similar premise to OUAT

Sweet. Do tell.

The book series says several fairies (Blue, Fairy Godmother, e.t.c) came to our world to tell the stories to writers as beacons of hope.

I always figured Blue probably came into our world at some point, and did the same thing.

It's just a theory, though.

I can see that. Hope was the exact reason Mary Margaret gave the enchanted storybook to Henry.

Random note: it's a shame if the Disney films don't exist I'd love to see Hook's reaction to finding out that the Disney Peter Pan depicted him with Black Beard's appearance minus the beard. xD

The biggest unanswered thing in OUAT: How did MM get the book?

He'd probably freak out, and demand the film be burned. Or be highly offended Pan is a playful, childish spirit in it.

True, though I believe it was established that even she doesn't know. It just appeared in her closet.

Rumour seems to be The Black Fairy did it, setting the whole series into motion.

I..guess that makes sense? With BF now involved in the events up to her eyebrows, maybe oddities can be blamed on her. Like Elsa and Anna, the Book, Henry being an Author, and even Emma herself, with her life being kinda crap before Henry finds her.

True.

Since the Black Fairy sentenced Rumple to his fate as the Dark One, she could indirectly be held accountable for his popping up and manipulating virtually everyone else's story and somehow she had to have made sure he'd inherit her curse to give to The Evil Queen.

I'm having a hard time with the reason she needed the curse to be cast but perhaps she couldn't return to the Enchanted Forest apart from being summoned, the opening she uses to steal a baby only allows her into the real realm so she needed to relocate the Enchanted Forest there to reunite with her son and get to Emma.

I had trouble with that one, and I'm super casual on OUAT-WTF's: I usually just accept all the new info as it comes, but that stuck out for me.

I think BF accidentally caused a few plotholes, somewhere or other, along the course of the series.

If she wasn't planned the whole time, there would have been no way to avoid some plot holes when she was incorporated as she was, and I hope she wasn't pre-planned because then it's just sloppiness.

The life Emma was subjected to by the curse, in a place where her savior's magic didn't exist and in a situation in which theoretically there was no hope does fit The Black Fairy's calling card and bringing about that isolation is what she's doing again now with the curse she just cast at Emma's wedding but the redundancy is still an issue.

On the other hand, since Emma is being written off perhaps it is successful this time and she's killed. There is no confirmation that she's supposed to leave behind a daughter next season as you read.

Hmm, this is all very interesting conversation! A very neat discussion this has turned out to be, it seems! I didn't think this thread would get so much discussion out of it! I feel happy! :3

But anyways, I really don't know what to expect with a Season 7 of this show. I am honestly ready to say goodbye to this series once the final Episode hits tomorrow. I just can't see any other things that the characters can do, since they've already reached a peak in which character development is basically nonessential, since the most important characters have gotten heaps of development, particularly villains like Rumple and villains turned heroes like Regina and Hook! I don't know, it's just that I really don't like the idea of this show being cancelled during its seventh season, therefore leaving the show unfinished, and therefore making all the years I spent investing myself in these characters feel irrelevant. And I don't want to feel that way, considering I love this series to death!

I don't know...ABC, Kitsis and Horowitz should really hang up their boots and lay this show to rest the right way! Without any cliffhangers a potential Season 7 could bring! D:

I'm going to avoid watching the finale, myself: It's going to DVR, and I'm going to ignore it for a week or two. I hate seeing shows get cancelled, or end, and I'm not really ready for the finale, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I can see how you feel. It's understandable.

I'll watch the Episode on Monday, cuz that's when it airs on Hulu! I wanna see how this Final Battle comes to a close! :D

No spoilers, please: I'll see it eventually. Probably after I finish the book. Sort of just living in a little bubble of denial for the second xD

But seriously, here's hoping Once gets a good send off, and someday gets mentioned in the same breath as Buffy and Charmed as "Best fantasy tv shows".
