why does want it? what would he gain? is he only doing it for MX?

Well as long as he doesn't die in the end, he gets a powerful weapon, so I think that is a big bonus, plus he didn't really exist before that, also he is made of pure darkness, so that factor might motivate him.

(Just a suggestion, some people might not entirely understand what the post you made is saying, maybe a little editing?)

Well I'd do it cause it sounds fun, but maybe its cause Vanitas doesn't have anything better to do.

I think the fact that he gets the X-Blade, and that he could take part in a war where many would be killed, are reason enough for him.

And who knows, once he had the X-Blade under his control, with Ven and Aqua out of the way, he could just betray Xehanort and do what he wants with its power...

He wants to start the Keyblade War I think because of MX and to see what it was like

I think that exactly it. Xehanort still had some light, but Vanitas was pure darkness. Of course he'd try something like that.

Vanitas honestly has really nothing to gain. He spent the entirety of his existence with MX, so all he wants to do is see his Master's plan come into fruition. Of course, as a being of pure darkness, it's arguable that perhaps he wants plain and utter destruction of the worlds.
