Hey guys! I've been wanting to do a bit of a KH13 discussion thread recently, so here I am, wanting to talk about nostalgia. What makes you nostalgic, what are you nostalgic about that may not be as good as you remember, really anything. So, here's some music to set the mood, and lets get some discussion going!

There's a lot I'm nostalgic about. Random things, really. I have a lot of random memories brought back anytime I listen to this song- and not even about this game. It's random things like, how I used to watch Dexters Lab in my dad's room while playing with MS Paint on the computer, or playing Sonic 3k. How I would come home from school and drink some juice, and go play ball with my late pet dog Ani (short for Animal.) We have this huge ditch behind our house that there wasn't a fence blocking, so one day when we threw the ball, it went a bit too far and we had to go find it, but we found this boomerang instead. We tried so hard, but we were never able to figure out how to get it to work!

 

Related to this theme, though. This is what got me initially interested in the Sonic comics- because this song would play in the Extra's menu, where they had a bunch of the old Sonic Comic covers, and the first three comics were readable. I remember looking at the covers of the comics and wondering what happened to Sonic, why was he in space? Why is Sally crying? Is that Sonic's gravestone? I spent hours on this screen reading and looking at all the details of these Sonic comics, wanting so much to read them.

 

A few other things I remember as I kid, my mom would take us kids to this fast food place and we'd bring back bags and bags of those ball bit balls, because we were thieves lol. Tiny tiny thieves.

 

I remember staying up late to finish Kingdom Hearts because, we were always so dang close! My brothers and I shared a room, and would stay up wayy past out bedtime to finish the first KH game, but never did. A few years later, we got KH2 and we were able to beat that pretty easy. We went back to the first KH and finally finished off that rotten Ansem for good! I didn't get to play CoM for years after, but thankfully I had the CoM Manga to fill me in on the story.

 

 

Well, I guess I've done enough rambling for now. What random memories or feelings of nostalgia do you wanna share? Feel free!

I love that track from the mega collection. Alright, you've peaked my interest. 

 

Personally, I've always been really nostalgic for the old Sonic games and style, pre-Adventure. There's just something about classic Sonic that got me excited as a kid and even though I'm probably a decade too late to the party on being there when they first came out, I still greatly enjoyed them when I got that collection for Gamecube. I played the crap out of both Sonic 1 and 2, eventually beating the first game with all chaos emeralds although never managing to get them all in the sequel. 

 

A lot of people view Sonic the Hedgehog in a somewhat negative light and its fans even moreso due to how friggin crazy some fans have been. It got to the point that for the longest time, I didn't even really associate myself in the fandom online at all because there was such a negative connotation with them and children who complained by the character's eye and arm colors. Ridiculous. Not to mention, but the games started getting pretty bad about the mid 2000s, only just starting to get the hang of what they wanted by 2008 onward. 

 

Sonic Generations is my current favorite of the series because it blended the best of both worlds with really good callback gameplay to the originals with classic Sonic yet still improving on the formula modern Sonic games had been working with since 1999. Despite that, though, the franchise seems to have a stain on its reputation for breeding autistic man-children who screeched about every flaw and inconsistency which is sad because it's one of my longest-loved game franchises, beaten out by the likes of Kingdom Hearts and Crash Bandicoot. 

 

If there's a point to this post, it's probably that people should be allowed to respect and cherish their childhood memories of what they loved but freaking out when you're older and acting like one change is the end of the world does more harm than good to the very thing you want to see more of.

Ah nostalgia it's a wonderful thing. I guess I can share a few nostalgia moments and how they are active today as older.

 

Playstation has always been my favourite and first owned console. Whenever I see and play PS1 PS2 games my energy level rises to a playful and sarcastic personality. Probably cause I loved when enemies died on the games with funny sound effects back then or that I felt victorious if I beat a game. Whenever someone mentions GameBoy I immediately get nostalgia memories from when I was really young playing Donkey Kong, Super Mario and early Harry Potter games with retro music. I'm very nostalgic for Sonic Heroes, used to play it non-stop as a kid and still love playing it today.

 

Having cereals, cookies boxes with figurines that I used to collect from promoted movies and series. Good times

 

Pokemon itself, especially the anime gives me strong nostalgia vibes after been watching the anime every Saturday morning growing up. That also includes other cartoons from both Cartoon Network, Disney Afternoon & Nickelodeon. 

 

Music comes in so many different categories for nostalgia. Many Britney songs were heard back then and memorized including many italian songs played in the house. Disney songs for an ex are very nostalgic. 

Very nostalgic for watching movies that were made all the way till 2011. Nostalgia also comes very much from vibrance for me, cause I love the influence of colors Ive had growing up.

 

There's more than what I mentioned but this is what I feel for now.

Ooh, this is an interesting thread, and I liked reading through these posts! You've all shared some interesting stories! Okay, now it's my turn!

 

When I think about nostalgia, many things come to mind. One thing that brings me nostalgia are movie tickets! No, really, I'm serious! For the past three of four years or so, I've collected movie tickets from all the movies I've seen with my friends and family! Whenever I take them out to look at them, I smile and remember the good times I've had watching these movies! The Amazing Spider-Man 2, for instance! When looking upon that movie ticket, I remember that we saw that movie on my birthday, and I was with my best friends Jonathan, Dennys and Selina, and since it was my birthday, and since they knew I loved Spider-Man, they took me to the movies to see the film! And God, it was an experience, and watching Gwen's death scene broke us all! Overall, we enjoyed the movie together, and afterwards, we took pics right beneath a giant hanging multiposter of the movie!  And then there's Big Hero 6! I watched that movie with my Mom, my sister and my niece, and I remembered that I was very psyched to see this film! Outside of the room where we were gonna see the movie, there was a big, inflatable Baymax situated just next to the door! My niece and I got excited and took pictures with said Baymax, and I remember hugging the thing to death! We watched the film and enjoyed it, and it was an emotional ride for us, with Tadashi's death and Hiro coping with it in the movie. And ya know, I have many memories associated with these movie tickets, and it's something that just links me back to those times, ya know? X3

 

And then there's also a popcorn bucket my best friend/soul brother Jonathan gave to me when we went to watch Captain America: Civil War last year on my birthday! After I got home, I washed the bucket and cleaned it up, and then I was pondering what to do with it! Then, the idea came to me! I could use it as a memento bucket to store different objects and things that call to mind moments of my life! Some of said items in said memento bucket include a pair of chopsticks that I got from a Japanese restaurant I went with with my family when we visited my brother in Chicago! There's also a red and white cup that I got when I went with a friend of my best friend's sister to Walgreens to buy some cups to drink soda, cuz we were eating pizza at the time! Turns out the cups were a bit expensive, lol, and I managed to end up keeping one! Another item I have there is Terra's Wayfinder, which I got at last year's Comic-Con, when a friend of mine, Karla and her brother Charlie urged me to come see the Wayfinders in display! And I obviously had to buy one, so I bought Terra's! And there's lots of other little items that I have in my memento bucket!

 

So yeah, nostalgia is a nice thing. It helps us to remember things from the past that have influenced our lives and brought us smiles to our faces, ya know?

Oh, plenty of things. Honestly, as an (overworked) adult, there's often just not a lot of time to create new and distinct impressions of things that will leave an indelible mark on your subconscious. That's why tapping into nostalgia is such a powerful (and let's be honest, mildly exploitative) marketing tool. This thing you like is still the thing you like! That's always my favorite part of nostalgia, but you can also overdose on it a bit.

 

For me, personally, music is a huge thing. So what I did is create a "summer playlist" that contains very specific songs that, for one reason or another, evoke a powerful emotional response within me. But in order not to cheapen the effect that these songs can have, I'll file these songs away and not play them until it's summer time; summer offering its own form of nostalgia, as it's always my favorite time of the year (part because of my birthday, part childhood sense that summer represents unfettered freedom from responsibility). I'll also occasionally add new songs if I come across one that resonates enough, as a small sign of growth and acknowledgement that I'm an evolving person.

 

I also travel a lot (for one reason or another) so plane rides also give me a huge nostalgic rush. As soon as the plane takes off (and they allow electronics to be turned on again!) I'll throw on some headphones, cue up my playlist, and it's a moment that reminds me that everything can be right with the world.

 

Video games, obviously, have their own way of triggering that sensation. That one's a bit harder to find a balance on (constantly replaying old games vs exploring new ones and expanding horizons), but Kingdom Hearts games are, for me, ones that strike that balance. Granted, KH2 (and Roxas' final line about summer) always hits me right in the feels, so that's something I can never get rid of.

My dreams...the ones that appear when you sleep, as well as my dreams in life...They allow me to remember nearly everything memorable. If I just remember one dream, I remember some of the others, and I am reminded of so many things and concepts. It doesn't matter how sad or scary or exciting they may have been...I can remember the dreams I had, the memories of my past, and more importantly, remember what I originally intended to do in my life!

 

I had this one dream about being in Castle Bleck in Super Paper Mario (most of you probably don't know what it looks like), and I will never forget the view I witnessed. Basically, it was a failed attempt at trying to save the world, in my dream. But just remembering this dream...I am able to remember hundreds of things and even branch off into more memories, even very distant memories. It is actually a wonderful feeling, because it tells me that I haven't forgotten these things entirely!

 

In the end, my nostalgic memories are thanks to remembering my dreams and my past. I like reminding myself of the people and characters and ideas I have seen or imagined, whether they are good or bad. I may not remember everything, but thanks to my dreams, I can hold much more memory in the back of my head than I would if I just forgot my dreams. The brain truly has immense capabilities, huh?
