I too didn't like it for how cluttered it was

I personally think you should have just started out in the hanger screen and then into free flying
then hit a button like select or the touch pad on the PS4 to bring up the map to place markers

cause that way, it places you into the action faster and if you know where to go and have your ship good to go, you can just start out and bada bing go
