Hmm it is true

Just generally not being in the best of health

1) Lack of AoE attacks: There are AoE attacks but frankly they are not enough, you need to have three or more Orbs of the same element in order to maybe unlock one, and it's hell to manage all the slots in that manner, especially considering the limitations in the quartz. Feels like you should get access to them sooner;

2) Defensive Arts are crap: The defensive arts take the illogical and frankly absurd approach of lasting for one enemy attack instead of the entire turn. This means that in mob fights (i.e. 99.9% of the battles in the game), you're ALWAYS at a disadvantage when you use a defensive art instead of an AoE art. Makes them feel essentially worthless.

3) Enemies without disadvantage: Although a lot of enemies do have elemental disadvantages, a lot of the more powerful ones don't. You may think that this is a nice way of ramping up the difficulty, but the opposite is true: it basically makes it pointless to do Orbment planning or any elemental optimization of the sort because you can not exploit the enemies' weaknesses in any way.
