that's probably the in-universe thing, but who knnows really... it's more liekly with what @Inçendyne said, wher epeople started using "eggman"

But keep in mind, it's kinda like Tails' name isn't actually "tails" but "Miles Prower"

Example Sonic generations where tails says "Robotnik" and he says "nobody calls me that anymore"
