Idk where soul hackers fits into that. Played some of it and it's firetrucking weird

SJ is really not, but some players really enjoy its etrian oddysey style gameplay so it doesnt grate on them

DDS1 and 2 are like one game btw

though 2 has much MUCH more refined combat and balance

The 3ds version of strange journey was honestly quite welcoming up til like end game

SMT4 starts off with an incredibly hard tutorial dungeon but then gets much easier

I've heard the 3ds version stream lines a lot of shit

Nocturne is one of those games where it has a great gaming experience in it, but it actively tries to stop you from having it

What does that mean

the game is much less than the sum of its parts unless you know what you are doing already

lets say you like fast characters who deal spike damage

you might go agility / luck for high speed, high accuracy, and high crit chance with low chance to be crit yourself

fun fact, these stat formulas in nocturne are so broken that they do close to nothing

at level 50 it takes 13 points of agility to increase accuracy by 1%

so if you make that build, you are essentially level 1 power but with all the downsides of level scaling formulas working against you

so you need to restart and make a strength build

if you make a magic build it starts out fine, then you hit a damage cap

so you need to grind and switch to a strength build

That sounds firetrucking awful

the praise the game gets is because everyone goes through the initial rough hump of either being told or forced to make a strength build

if you don't do that, you will get stuck and give up or attepmt to grind it out and realize you can't

also hard mode is absolutely nuts

doing hard mode without knowing how to do abusive things is a nightmare

to the extent that the Hardtype hack is actually easier, because it rebalances the game to allow you to actually have different build options

so you dont have to just deal with the fact that only strength builds work, meaning only strength skills are viable
