Then again, I think that the line between challenging and fair and challenging and unfair is very fine in RPGs

After all there aren't skills or reactions or timings involved, it's just the act of selecting actions for your players

Which is why I think Trails 1 Nightmare feels like it's allowed to break its own rules from time to time

Yeah it's why I prefer Ys from a gameplay standpoint. Those games are pretty well designed. They're kind of the opposite of trails in that regard.
