railgun is more of an offshoot focusing on shock girl

she's not as important in the main series

more so if you really wanna watch her it seems

magical index is more about the magic side of the world

while railgun is more about the science

timeline wise

Railgun season 1 takes place first

then index season 1

this is a light spoiler but in season 1 of index

Touma loses his memory after the first arc

 

so in railgun season 1, you see him prior to that happening

and then in season 2 of Railgun, there's an arc that took place in Index Season 1

but more from shock girl's perspective

so lots of overlap

so timeline wise it's like

railgun season 1
index season 1 = railgun season 2 (kinda)

index season 2
index season 3

and now railgun has another season going on

that takes place during index season 2

i used to be super into this series, read the light novels of Index up to a point

index has a lot more drama and shit happening

while railgun is more slice of life ish kinda with more friendly banter
