My mom had her friend set up savings bonds for my sister and me before she passed.

My parents invested in saving bonds for me when I was born. They put $2000 into it.

When I cashed it out a couple of years ago it was at $500.

So... yea.

They're based on stocks.

And whoever was in charge of this bond is a complete idiot.

So it just steadily lost value over the next 18 years from the initial investment.

The worst part is, most publicly traded companies has increased 10x since that initial investment. Which means whoever put together that fund firetrucked up big time.

Every tech company, every media company, every retail company is valued at at least 5x what it was when that investment was made. So it really makes me wonder what kind of companies they invested in.
