Also, the way Venitas talks about the Keyblade War is both wrong and correct. It’s a combination of faint, firsthand experiences, but also whatever Xehanort remembers from being raised by Player. So like, does Vanitas have those memories? If so, how negative are they? Is the negative overpowering the positive? Or are they lost entirely bc of time displacement? Marly and Larx got there’s back because their memory loss was a side effect of becoming Nobodies, but Ventus never split like that. He was artificially split by a man who decided to play god on a Sunday bc he was told he was special.

Bc Heartlesses are Darkness, but they’re not sentient. Nobodies are also Darkness, but can become people through interaction and meaningful connections. Xehanort is also “Darkness”, but he’s still has enough Light to be a Person and is able to retain a Keyblade and not be corrupted like the villains.

Some Heartless are more sentient than others. The word sapient is what you seek, and yes some are sapient aswell. Ansem SOD, Sora's Heartless The Darklings.

They are just all except Sora's Heartless for a brief time have the same urge to consume Light and spread Darkness. They are literally just the physical incarnations of Hearts that are taken by Darkness

And certain dark creatures can summon and control them like Dark Chirithy also a Darkness-born and based creature. And True Darknesses ofc since they are spawned from them or one of them

And self-aware inner darknesses can summon and control them too

But what does that make Vanitas?

It's great we have different types of Darknesses and darknesses, but it's unhelpful if we're trying to figure out what category Vanitas is, or is he's in one at all.
