Glad I am not alone in reading it like that

But he's fictional, whats it matter? If its something everyone knows is a thing then... that's just kinda odd lol

It’s just a social norm 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think it's more so that it's such a common thing in those countries it doesn't need an explanation, which does make sense with Square's practices in the past focusing in Japan so much more than anywhere else

Basically yes

It's just my guess on it tho

But also, it's just a haircut

A very short one that he might have done out of pettiness, who knows

It’s still significant. Ever notice how anime characters rarely change their hair?

That's more so out of convenience

Happens in western cartoons too

Convenience backed by a cultural norm though

Animation is a hard job, trying to add detail on a new hairstyle would be a lot of work

It's simpler to keep the same hairstyle and just change it when they need it ie a timeskip or a character progression

Or if you go shonen stuff, power ups

Right, a big change. It aligns with the unspoken rule.

I agree that in some cases it's like that but I bet that a majority of them it's not

So wait then are actual haircuts supposed to be a big deal for them too or just for their fictional works

It’s hard to say either way. I mean, we didn’t make it. How would we know?

Cus like, surely not everyone just lets it grow out and out and out until something significant happens in their life lol

Like take Kairi's, right? Typically that'd be seen as her growing up and becoming more mature.

Usually in Japan long haired characters get associated with innocence and immaturity.

Not all the time, of course. But typically.

lol no of course not. They just keep it a consistent style.

Feels like that'd get pretty inconvenient the longer it gets but what do I know :akarishrug:

It’s tradition. Dates back to the Middle Ages, when samurai would cut their hair to honor a fallen brethren.

I don't think anything will ever make less sense to me than fabricated concepts, like there's so many better ways to honor people or show a change in personality but if that's what floats their boat then whatever ig lol

I’m sure it would make sense if I were Japanese
