At least for Roxas, and this is more a theory than anything, I suppose.. I always assumed Roxas was Sora’s body, and that Sora had gained a form, much like Ansem SoD.. but that that runs into this fact: Ansem SoD used Riku’s body to gain physical form, even molding it into a new one

However.. Riku DID gain a new body after the fact

So now it begs the question...

How can they gain new bodies?

To clarify, when I say new form, I mean Sora’s heartless body was molded into that of his original image

As of now.. I feel it is gone

Well it's more like Riku let ansem posess him, but when ansem went to the end of the world he cast riku into the realm of darkness because he didnt need him anymore

But he's not, riku is in the realm of darkness before sora gets to the end of the World

Ansem doesn't have a form without Rikus body tho

He's just a brown coat

And at end of the world. He's using his body, you see it on the beach

Ansem doesn't need a body though. He simply used riku until he didn't need him.

He's a heartless so he does if he wants a proper form

There's something in KH3 that confirms this but ofc, I can't say it here

Since ansem was always a heart, he used riku until he was strong enough to cast him aside after rehaining a physical form

Heartless regrow their forms when they return to darkness unless their destroyed by the keyblade

Why would a heartless need to give up a form, if he's just a heartless

Why would he even have a form

Ansem needed a body that he could manipulate to his will

Until he could become strong enough to regain a physical form

Well more like ansem was able to manipulate his form into riku to manipulate sora
