I would very seriously advise to just take the KH3 scenes at face value

terras heart couldnt return to his body while trapped in the guardian

my head canon, when lingering will was stabbed by terranort, it gave the guardian the will to resist terranort and free himself

That was just a weird explanation

Just take what the cutscene said

Which is that Terra's heart was lost

master xehanort is just him

he didnt time travel

he came back together once ansem and xemnas died

When Ansem and Xemnas were defeated originally, both Terra and Xehanort came back in their own bodies

But Terra's heart got lost and never went into his body

So it was just an empty vessel

prolly due to all the guardian nonsense

Just like how Ventus was for 10 years
