raiden94 current theory is that the cetra split the entire world into multiple parallel worlds via the lifestream to protect the planet and that's basically what FFXIV did too but with way more nuance and more cruelty. In XIV the avatar of the mothercrystal "Hydaelyn" genocided the original world into multiple parallel worlds because the original people of the planet thought themselves as gods and created their own demise by trying to play god and not understanding people.
