I got so done with AC when I heard that they killed off the main antagonist that transcends the entire timeline in a comic

It's so annoying to see games still suffering from the crystal tools and luminous era. the other single player studios are doing mostly a great job. Theathrythm, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Octopath, Triangle Strategy and Live a Live were all received well

mhm

if any of them used that heIIscape of an engine they'd've been haIf-baked on reIease

aII of them

eyyyy

this entire discourse around the term "JRPG" is so fascinating currently.

it's interesting how divisive the topic is. I saw people saying that games like P5 or Xenoblade aren't JRPGs. For other people it's just RPGs made in Japan. And then there's people that say all games that aren't turnbased aren't jrpgs

Lol

It's all over the place

r/JRPG is legitimately in shambles right now

because people can't find a definition

for me there's no objective truth regarding what a JRPG is. I think it's entirely personal

and depends on how people themselves define it

There's also an interesting discussion regarding what does "pandering to the west" actually mean. I saw some people commenting that "pandering to the west" could also mean making the games even more "japanese" because people in the west want more jrpg looking games

the entire discussion is really interesting imo

I mean I get it cause we don't have a name like wrpg

I mean it does suck that there is an image of jrpgs with typical anime tropes, hot spring, beach ep, etc

That's not just for jrpg's

replace jrpg's with anime and you get the same thing

That's why I don't like Xenoblade 2 as much over XB1

Most people will just think of the more common tropes, ie beach episodes, big tiddies, fan service etc

I mean dark souls is made in Japan yet not called a jrpg

But despite that you still get huge variety of different anime that has none of that

Oh I get that but the the mass think of the tropes more then the ones that don't have that

Japan has been put on this pedestal for better or worse, and it shows when people can't even agree on a term like jrpg

Like I had no idea jrpg had a bad reputation but now that I think about it I see where he comes from

Won't stop me from saying jrpg cause that's what we are all used to at this point

sometimes I wonder if the west is partly at fault for these tropes because people always want the same

and if it limits creative freedom of writers because the target audience wants these tropes

basically something gets popular

and then people only want the popular thing

e.g isekai stories or open world games

Then that would be the japanese audience who wants the same, especially if we go by 15 years ago when getting JRPG to the west was harder

I am playing through XC2 now and the writing really took a dive

Like I can forgive some of the tropes but boy am I just not interested in this story

I am on chapter 5 now, which is halfway through

So hopefully like the first game the third act makes up for it

the surprising thing is FFXVI for example is massively popular in JP right now. I wonder if it is because of the game just being a FF game or because they finally changed the formular

I doubt it's because of a change in formula when every mainline FF game changes it

changing to a medieval setting is a massive shift for a franchise where the past games had more modern stuff

true

people will go crazy next month when SE shows the zones. the media saw gameplay behind close doors in the open world and they described the zones as extremely detailed

and all sidequests will apparently be character driven quests like in XC3 hero quests or in witcher 3 some of the sidequests

doesn't jrpg IiteraIIy mean Japanese RoIe-PIaying Game

wh-

FROMSOFT ARE JAPANESE??

I aIways thought as a kid that RPG meaning games with numbers but action based with non-sword esque weapons
JRPG meaning turn-based
ARPG meaning action game with numbers

so
Dirge of Cerberus - RPG
FinaI Fantasy 7 - JRPG
Crisis Core - ARPG

oh though maybe mass effect is a better exampIe of what I thought RPGs were
technicaIIy, ME is an RPG

my head hurts

most game genres blend into each other nowadays

any game with some choice/character progression kinda is a rpg

=D

Iet’s hope someone doesn’t sIip up and start caIIing megaman an rpg cuz you can choose your weapons

...

Daz I'm sorry to tell you
