sumeru is like, half forest and half desert. the region as a whole takes inspiration from a variety of real world locations, similar to the other nations (except those ones typically focused on a single real world location). the real world locations chosen were south and southwest asia (along with some egyptian mythos for the desert, iirc), and the characters are, well... not exactly what you'd expect when hearing that's the areas they took inspiration from

It’s still really bad they based/named them off real people, and made them pasty as firetruck.

Nahida got the worst of it imo.

She’s in this gray area, bc her design is supposedly based on a Swahili myth, but her skin and hair are exactly the same color.

This is an archon, supposed to represent a nation full of primarily Middles Eastern and multiple African tribal group, yet is probably one of the palest, lightest characters in the game.

And this is with Diluc and Venti existing.

It genuinely pisses me off so much that HYV firetrucked up so badly with their designs, they purposely made Nahida, her attacks, and her lore as pretty and as likeable to cover up the obvious issues with her design.

Actually, she’s the perfect archon for Sumeru.

If they firetrucked up this badly with Sumeru, Natlan is going to be an actual nightmare because that nation is, supposedly, based on Indigenous America, particularly Mexico and SA.

real talk, though:

she was one of 3 gods that was supposed to take care of the region before bad shit happened and the other 2 died. king deshret was more of the "i'll cover the desert stuff" guy than nahida was. and that's not even mentioning the fact that nahida isn't even the original archon but a branch off of her

 

We already get the short stick in our own countries, and their God is one of War and no one is allowed to leave.

maybe that's why there's been 0.000001% mention of natlan in game at this point

I can make better Genshin characters in two seconds than HYV can in 2 years.

there was some discussion about how hyv, being a chinese company, may not have the best way of looking at things when it comes to people with darker skin. HOWEVER, i think that might be a topic that starts to get a little too far into real world problems to keep talking about

You could just, not white wash dark-skinned characters.
