Oh wow

Its a miracle they even allowed it at all, now its a matter of pushing for that $1 Billion milestone.

Yeah there was a lot of uncertainty amongst the Japanese when asked by street interviewers, but now that it went through let's wait for their post-movie reactions

good critic scores, but i'm still waiting for the flixster scores (audience)

probabIy uItra Iove as weII

unIess it’s MCU reIated I feeI the critics are mostIy honest

it's not a matter of dishonesty, it's a matter of critics having different standards than your average moviegoer. some might call it pretentious, but like, the actual pros in the field have been exposed to schooling and such and have a different outlook as a result. though in the case of a public critique site that anyone can contribute to, it becomes more a matter of "these are just the x number of people who felt strongly enough to write out a review and score it" and that's also a different subset separated from the usual audience

Is it valid though when just about everything gets review bombed these days?

Way I see it when it comes to things like movies and games you can only trust yourself at this point most of the time

not even joking, the 7.8/10 too much water review was the turning point on me taking reviews seriously LMFAO

I have not bothered to look at or take into consideration any reviews or scores since then and only trust my own judgement on how much i think I'll enjoy something based on pre release material nowadays

unless of course there are like tons of game breaking things coming to light which is a different story imo

The trouble with that is I often find pre-release material unreliable. A lot of trailers show the games most iconic moments running in optimal conditions. Then you actually play the game...and realize that those moments are all the game has going for it.

when i say pre release material i also include gameplay clips and such. i always weigh my options with how fun i think the game will be versus how interesting i think the story is. if both are high then that's just a plus for me, but if one heavily outweighs the other then I'm a bit more cautious about it. it usually ends up in my "will buy on sale" list instead in that case lol

but yeah the thing about trailers showing off the only good things is why i make sure i enjoy the gameplay too, so then I'll be like "at least i had fun getting to those few moments"

also true (both you and limen)! honestly, i've kinda checked out of reviews too, especially when things i like end up getting low scores. more often than not, it's less "i'll use this to determine if i like it" and more "so what's everyone gonna be complaining about with this one?" (like the 7.8 review, lol)

the entire damn video was nothing but praise for the game and then they hit you with the 7.8 with the only con being too much water

And for me it's "Okay, how badly did they firetruck up this time?"

i just

i cant get over how idiotic that day was

That's just what we remember

Let's not forget all the 9's and 10's they gave games like the COD's or Hogwarts Legacy

Or how they do no true journalism for the industry and don't comment or call out bad shit the developers do so they can keep getting review keys.

it's less "they have worse takes" and more "those takes weren't as meme-worthy as 7.8 turned out to be"

That's the worst thing to me, the blatant fluffing they do for the big wigs and the inaction they take when bad stuff is happening clear as day.

Folks like Sterling and Jason Schrier make themselves pariahs just for reporting the facts but folks like IGN curate this idea of "ignore the bad just play games lol", and it's actively hurt the industry.

true though

To be fair, if IGN could approach these issues with any level of tact, I'd trust Sterling and Screier to write it more.

IGN is the tabloid of gaming news, incredibly difficult to take seriously

case in point (taken from an ign article)

we’ve reaIIy reached a point where both negative and positive review bombing are next to each other

positive review bombing happens everytime nostaIgia’s invoIved
meanwhiIe negative review bombing happens for any reason that week of the year
