AtLA is not perfect, but it does do a better job of tackling colonization and genocide that's ALSO enjoyed by people of any age. AVATAR is a hollow attempt at telling the stories of native and indigenous people, while also having none of the profits be given to the very real people it's taking inspiration from

and this story has a sequel

and yes it broke me even more

oh no

I'm ready but I'm not

the official name of the theme is "And love you shall find" btw

😭

Yes, I've seen both AVATAR movies. No, I have not seen them in theaters. Yes, I'm pissed off at the second tribe's designs (blue on blue gets muted). Yes I read the script for both. No, I will not see the next ones in theaters either, I'm not sure if I'll even watch them.

Hard to disagree with most of your points tbh.

I usually abstain from the "is white thing" only because I believe anyone should (on paper...) be allowed to artistically speak on something.

Problem is execution.

Avatar is weird cause it's either something people take completely seriously or not serious at all. Cameron obviously cares a lot about it, and that shows on screen. But I also feel that there's a lot of over simplification of things.

And plus, he's using the backdrop of colonialization to tell a... environmental story?

Like yes the two are connected in real life but like...

The movies feel like a romantization of indigenious erasure if that's even possible.

It misses how the people the blue cats are inspired by got, like, 80% deleted from the planet.

Whenever I personally say that I don't use it as a serious comparison, like to the historical person, but, it actually I think is quite a similar piece of media to Disney's Pocahontas.

-romanticized retelling of colonialism
-making the colonizers seem "Oh they were good people it's just their leaders"
-falling in love story between oppressor and opressed

Like it isn't 1:1 but imo it's there lol

Only thing missing is the general from the first Avatar calling them savages.

Also, Jake LARPS as an indigenous person and it's seen as a good thing.

"You're cured of your disability if you pretend to be an indigenous person!!!"

dafuq

Two shitty birds hit with one stone.

And idk if this controversial but I'm not even saying you CANT portray colonizers as 3 dimensional, but, they were full stop going for "cowboys and indians" and neglected that no, many of the colonizers, sure they had families and loved God but they killed those people with smiles on their faces.

I think it's hard for a lot of people to comprehend what it really means to see someone as "sub-human" like how they saw the natives and slaves.

Avatar I mean was going for allusions to Cowboys and Indians

Cowboys were also based off of Native Cultures in Mexico so like...

?shrug

I love AVATAR.

(sarcastic).

Why does that picture look AI generated?

The anatomy is corrected, but the colors are off.

Like, it’s pretty! But it just.

The blues are too similar.
