likely. with XVI and now Revelation they have been trying a lot to bring alternate playstyles for characters back

they have been experimenting a lot with the past 3 titles. unfortunately that means that turn-based FF is cooked

Remake combat is the future

I mean lets pump the breakes here, this is Square Enix we are talking about

XVI was likely also a testing ground for them regarding big boss fights.

If there is one thing we know since X is that they will change the combat completely

they made all of this shit for 7

I would be surprised if they tried to keep some consistency

pretty much only FFXV was out of the ordinary for the past 5-6 titles. All of them have been action focused mainly on a stagger system. I don't think we will see a big shift again like from turn-based to action

I think you need to look at all the games since X again

If SE doesn't keep Remake's combat in XVII I will punish them by cancelling my FFXIV sub... for 1 month a year

X went with the card turn table (no idea what to call it), XI was an MMO so to be expected to be different, XII had a wildly different gameplay than anything before, XIII was automatic with you switching up what stances to use while staggering enemies, XIV is an MMO again, XV is the first array into action that's more similar to Kingdom Hearts (but also nothing like it) and then XVI is a hack and slash game.

None of these games are remotely similar other than some having a stagger system
