7-9 are not popular BECAUSE of ATB

And they are still making the action brawler games

but now that SE doubled down on action since XV they can't necessarily go back to the old style because they built a new audience. it depends on the size of new players vs old players

Also, NOBU UEMATSU.

who is this about?

Like dude

This is more or less what Square needs to accomplish with FF

Yakuza

Or I guess Like A Dragon is what it's called now

FF6-X was such a perfect storm of quality- to say it comes down to just mechanics is ignoring the nuances of their pop culture significance.

Will always be Yakuza to me 😔

as much as ppl hate it but metaphor performs so well for atlus because it's just a persona reskin and ppl like persona

the characters even use the same animations as the phantom thieves

metaphor is basically

"hey you get persona but in a less cringe setting"

and also with better combat

they also had no real competition during that time

SE also had the issue that they got slandered hard during the ps3 era in the west

ahhhhh, wait what? What are the yakuza structured like?

anyway what made me mad about this thread is everything before the "edit" because it was completely missing the point about why atlus and bg3 performed so well

just say that you want a turn-based ff game

From 0 to 6 it was an action brawler game

But in 7 they got a new main character so they switched it to a turn based one instead

So the new mainline games are turn based now, at least so long as Ichiban is the MC

But then they do have some side games that still keep the brawler games like the older ones

that's firetrucking crazy

Kiryu got one last year, and Majima is getting a pirate game next year

honestly they should have named Octopath Traveler "Final Fantasy"

and most ppl would have been fine

I enjoyed the second game but it still lacks a proper party dynamic

If that was an FF game I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much

But i like that tho- I like that Square has other games; FF's problem is, it didn't experiment with turn based enough

Not like how Atlus does and did

They sort of did with 12 and 13

But after them turn based is just for spin offs and other franchises

But see i don't have a problem with that; FF is not beholden to adhere to rules like I think a lot of people act like it is imo

I do agree with ppl in the thread that "turn-based is antiquated" is super stupid though. this exact mentality was present during the ps3 era where japanese devs got bullied in the west for having a different game design style. And it's still an issue nowadays

"western game design" being called superior to japanese game design is still an issue

Well yeah it IS firetrucking stupid lmao

There is no antiquated game designs

Only poor implementation.

Fixed camera angles, quick time events, crafting mechanics, all of these are things people decided at their peak, but there's nothing wrong with them.

let me just say I hope that Dragon Age Veilguard won't get any nominations during the game awards because bioware devs were part of the issue

And there's more examples too obviously

WHERE IS MASS EFFECT 4.

there's a clip where bioware devs publicly shit on japanese devs and it made me angry on so many levels

but this year they are getting their revenge
