If he knew what CO was, Mickey might have gone looking. A possible reason he took so long in coming is that he might have caught sight of Aqua in the Realm of Darkness.

Well, hasn't Nomura hinted that Mickey came across Aqua in the RoD? And if rumors about BbSV2 are true... this could be very likely.

Mickey himself said that he was stuck in the Realm of Darkness i believe, or something along those lines. I'm not sure he was looking for Ventus, but its extremely possible he crossed paths with Aqua

If Mickey did meet Aqua in The RoD, it would either have been very brief as one of them was sucked away or Mickey just caught a glimpse of Aqua and was unable to find her again.

My reason for this idea is that when Aqua talks with Ansem the Wise, she has no idea what has been happening in the Worlds. If Mickey found her, he would have told her all he could.
