I will put this politely. Another member and I got into a heated discussion over whether or not Utada Hikaru has quit making music for Kingdom Hearts.

I believe that it is just a rumor and that if Utada comes off hiatus before KH3 is released she will still be willing to record a new song.

But the other member says that Utada has quit because they were not paying her enough.

What I want is proof. This whole argument can be ended if someone were to supply proof to back these claims.

Thank you.

either way, i hope they have someone for the opening song on the games, cuz they seem to go good with them.

She is on hiatus at the moment. By 2013, she will most likely resume working again. She never stopped singing for Kingdom Hearts. She just wanted to stop working for a while because ever since she debuted, she never stopped.

It's confirmed that she isn't making music for KH anymore due to payment issues I believe it was. Nomura didn't want anyone but her to do the themes for the games, and that's why we've been stuck with the same two songs for 10 years.

Please read my original post more clearly. I have already stated what you guys have said.

You want proof? It's in the inetrviews section on the homepage. Start from the past 5 years. You're welcome.

The other member knows his/her info.

I don't remember hearing of any confirmation either way. From what I read, Utada wasn't sure about whether she wanted to record for KH again or not--it was up in the air for her. And it wasn't just because of payment issues, but mainly because of her integrity as an artist. She didn't feel right about what she did with "Hikari" and "Simple and Clean" and "Passion" and "Sanctuary." As if the changing of the titles between the Japanese and English versions aren't enough of an indicator...

She said it was too hard for her to translate her own songs while keeping them the way they were originally meant to be. As you know, she had to alter the melody of "Hikari" quite a bit to make "Simple and Clean." And the lyrics of "Sanctuary" are COMPLETELY different from the lyrics of "Passion." Utada wasn't happy with writing two songs that were the same yet totally different. I can understand her point of view (especially with "Sanctuary," which is terrible, both lyrically and musically, compared to "Passion," and it honestly blows my mind that people actually enjoy "Sanctuary," even after they hear "Passion").

Anywho, I can't find the article where I got this information from, but that's what I understand about the situation. I will be heartbroken if she doesn't come back for KH3. :(

tutti frutti. I pretty much remember a vague combination of what Always and TheApprenticeOfKingMickey have stated. I believe the hiatus was from not receiving enough money on top of it being difficult for Utada to translate her own songs while retaining their original meaning. But at the very least I recommend what Rob said and check out the interviews.

Her hiatus has absolutely nothing to do with kingdom hearts, Disney or whatever. She went on hiatus for personal reasons.

Thank you. You're like the only person that agrees with me.

tutti frutti. Didn't mean anything major, I mentioned that I vaguely remember reading stuff like that, but I wasn't 100% sure about the hiatus and her work.

Utada hikaru has a hidden song she has not told us before there will be a kh3 utada hikaru song its a 10th anniversery secret surprise? but theres always a way to know....re:connect kh utada hikaru has best songs in english and japanies!

What I want is proof. This whole argument can be ended if someone were to supply proof to back these claims.

I'm too lazy to look for it but there is an interview where she said you quit due to not being payed enough by Disney. I'll see if I can find it quick... too lazy if it involves me going through dozens of interviews....

Found the quote

Are you going to be involved in the soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts III?

Utada: I don't think so, I don't know. Probably not.

Mr. Utada: We said no to Disney.

Utada: Ohh.

You turned down Disney?

Mr. Utada: Yeah. Because they don't pay.

Because they don't pay, yeah. My parents work for Disney World, so I'm sure they'd be in agreement with you on that.

Utada: They can have a drink over that [all laugh].

Okay, so going back a little bit, the fact that Exodus was released in English also in Japan, was that a conscious decision? Was there ever any pressure either on your label over there, or from other people to say, "Well, if you do Japanese versions of these songs, they'll be so much more accessible, many more people will get to that?"

Utada: Uh-huh. Well, from the beginning, yeah, before doing that contract, I'd done a few songs where I had to translate, like for Kingdom Hearts, I had to make an English version of the song "Hikari," which became "Simple and Clean," and then also for Kingdom Hearts II, I had to make the Japanese version which was the song "Passion" and then the English version that was "Sanctuary," and that was so hard, it's just, and it felt strained, and as a result, I'm happy that I worked hard to do those, because those English versions are really good and "Simple and Clean," I think, is a really good song, and people- most of the people that know me here, they know me for that- but it's not ideal for me as a writer, to- because, actually, I changed the melodies for "Simple and Clean" and "Hikari," because when you change the language you're singing in, the same melodies don't work- and as a writer, it's just very frustrating to have, like- I wrote these melodies for Japanese words, and to have to write in English for that, it's just not right. And then, so, for this, uh, this contract with Island Def Jam, in the beginning I separated it to this English language album, and I don't do Japanese translations. I just, my integrity as an artist just would not take that, could not take that.

EDIT: I just realized this thread is 6-7 months old...
