Racist? Texas high school apologizes for fans' 'USA!' chant after basketball game

By msnbc.com staff

A Texas school district has apologized for what some perceived as a racist chant from fans after one of its teams beat a rival in a high school basketball playoff game.

Alamo Heights High School, which is made up mostly of white students, beat Edison High, which is predominantly Hispanic, in the Region IV-4A championship in San Antonio on Saturday. As Alamo players celebrated the win on the court, a large group of students began cheering “USA! USA!”Alamo Heights head coach Andrew Brewer silenced the students as soon as he heard them, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Alamo Heights Superintendent Kevin Brown said he has apologized to San Antonio Independent School District officials. As punishment, Alamo Heights students who were involved in the chanting will not be allowed to attend the team’s remaining state title games.

The San Antonio district on Tuesday also filed a complaint with the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of high school sports in the area.

Of course you can have an educated opinion, but with your original post you basically made a mockery of everyone who found this racist.

And you repeated what I said basically with the whole "Just cause you find it racist does not mean I find it racist."

It's more of how the community targeted sees it, and obviously they saw it as racist.

I'm not trying to fight, just trying to shed some light so you can see why and how it's racist and wrong.

Know what your right. I'm sorry.

I personally think this could be considered racism, albeit in a less extreme form than normal. USA isn't exactly an uncommon thing to be chanted, and by itself I really don't think it is that offensive. The fact that that they chanted it after their mostly White team beat a mostly Hispanic team, though, is where the problem stems. It is pretty much common sense that in a situation like this, someone would be offended. Its great that the school apologized, as I am sure there are many that wouldn't have. I really don't think that there is much to discuss here. People obviously took it offensively, it was pretty obvious that it would happen as such, no violence or injury occurred, those involved were punished, and an official apology was issued. Case closed.

I just wished we lived in a society without racism. Would make the world much better. Alas, I don't foresee it happening anytime soon.

Basically no one payed attention in Social studies...(except for some)

I honestly don't really think this is racism.

We scream USA at our football games, and I live in a pretty mixed race school district. When we scream it, we're not being racist. If we get a touchdown, we yell it. If they get a touchdown, they yell USA. No one cares and we've been doing it for years. Asians, African-Americans, Hispanics, ect. since the school was founded in the 60's and to date no one's had a problem with it.

Basically that

:/

ok, look. While I admit, Koko is overeacting, (sorry), this is rude, wrong, and I'm glad the students were banned from the school games. I mean, look at history. The Irish came over, they were discriminated against by white people. Then came the African Americans, who were sold into slavery by white people. And now the Hispanic immigrants are being persecuted by white people. And you have to realize, I am fully white. This country was built on immigrants, and we are shoving them to the ground like dirt. Chanting U.S.A is innapropriate, and extremely rude. The teams had nothing to do with U.S.A. as a whole, so there must be a reason behind it against a mostly Hispanic team. Whether it was a joke or not is irrelevant. If someone called you fat, ugly, and a slut, but then said it 'was only a joke', it doesn't stop it from hurting.

I don't think I'm overacting, I think I'm just not tolerating silly and stupid jokes anymore like most people do. People joke about serious things far to often and frankly I'm sick of it. I'm not overacting, I'm just making a stand, imo.

But I agree with the rest of your post.
