So i'm just gonna get straight to the point here if people who vote to ban gay marriage and think they can control their lives and not let them get married why can't we just vote to ban Hetero marriages? and It's just a point i mean no harm to all you Straight peeps D: But you know what I mean it kinda seems so fair.

But I think gay marriage shouldn't be banned. Some married couples make it seem like its not that great, so why not let gays share their misery together as well?

There shouldn't be ANY laws that prohibit the marriage between two people that genuinely love one another. There isn't anything "fair" about banning one or the other. It shouldn't matter if the two people are gay/straight/whatever. If they want to marry then they should be allowed to marry. Besides, banning that would only feed fire to the flame and wouldn't get anything productive done towards and gay rights movements and would just make the people fighting for the community look like assholes too.

To be honest, I thought this topic was a joke at first.

I don't think this would help the community at all.... plus if we are immature about heterosexual marriage like some are about gay marriage.....stuff would just end up really not good o3o.

i am a christian and i belive that being gay is wrong because God made man to be with woman it was adam and eve not adam and steve. so i would say no to gay marriages i dont hate gays or anything but i do belive its wrong

The definition marriage shouldn't be the argument as to why not. I believe it is defined as between a man and a woman in the bible, but not everyone believes or reads the bible. Nothing should be based on religion because religion =/= politics.

By nature, languages can and will change over the course of time, not to mention that if you look up "marriage" in any new dictionary then "gay marriage" is already one of the definitions desipte the fact that gay marriage is not currently legal everywhere. And even though historically (even with the ancient Greeks who did not oppose homosexuality) marriage has always been between a man and a woman... there is little reason why such a trivial word cannot be changed.

"Matrimony" is sacred... as in, the rite performed through the religious institution is sacred. Though, I do not believe there are any legitimate reason to not allow someone to marry whom they love.

The only I guess 'legitimate' reason (imo) would be religious, and even then, just because someone's religion says they can't, doesn't mean they should stop others, yknow?

True, actually, there were 2 "legitimate" reasons that came to mind. Neither are reason to ban gay marriage outright, but:

- the states's rights issue - since marriage is not something that the federal government has any power over whatsoever, making a federal law recognizing gay marriage would be a violation of the tenth amendment (assuming that not allowing gay marriage does not violate anything else in the Constitution... which I believe it would not, if civil unions truly were equal to marriage). This is reason enough to oppose gay marriage as something that is allowed nationally rather than simply legalizing it in all 50 states

- the idea that 2 gays's love for each other is true and equal to the marriage between a man and woman can also be applied to polygamy. Besides personal belief, there is no reason that a man love two women and that love to be any less true or legitimate than the love between a man and one other person. Separate issue, I know, but if polygamy can be opposed on the basis of a personal belief then there is really no reason that gay marriage can be opposed due to a different belief. That's an inconsistency in the stance of people who support gay marriage who also oppose polygamy, saying that personal beliefs should have no impact on gay marriage while also opposing polygamy due to their own personal beliefs.

 

Considering that allowing gay marriage is not a great injustice to anyone (as in, it's not taking away the rights of anyone, even straights or religious people) then I see no reason for anyone to need it to be stopped. Like you said, if you don't like it or don't believe in it then don't participate in it... it affects no one but the two people involved so there's no reason to not allow it.
