Gah, honestly right now I'm not even sure if I'm going to college. For some reason I feel like I'd just be going to be going and not getting anything out of it. I don't know what I would take? I know that I want to be an artist, I'm already taking many classes for drawing, painting, color theory, a water color course, a painting group all most every week, and I draw, paint and digital paint in my freetime (lol freetime? What's that?) My friends have joked before about me having a solo gallery before I'm 18 (a solo gallery is a place where you display all of your own work to be sold), and honestly I think that's an awesome idea and I'm kind of making that my goal. If people are willing to buy my art and I could make a living off that, it would be amazing!

But then I think artists rarely make it big and can sustain themselves off of commisions and art sales. So what would I do? A lot of artists become teachers, but that has never appealed to me. I could go to school and become a graphic designer? But graphic designers don't make much money and it's very hard to find work. I could be a video game designer, an illustrater, ugh I just don't know.

I feel like I have no plans for my future. Well except one. What I WANT is to move right outside of the city to a nice home, paint, and raise chickens. Yeah.

I feel like a mess when I start to think of this. And I feel even worse when someone asks me "Oh, so what are your plans for when you're older?" or "what do you want to do when you're older?"... *sigh*

Any advise?

Nobody can be the boss of your life, if that's what you want to do, then do it. Don't listen to what other people say. What I usually say is, if you're good at it then do it, and do your best at it.

A good reason to go is that at the very least, you'll get a college diploma. In this day and age, and high school diploma won't get you very far. Plus, college is a time to have run and really enjoy your youth. High school can really suck sometimes, and when you get into the workforce, you won't have as much downtime and you'll probably be stressed. So college is the break inbetween to make new friends and have a great time.

If your life's goal is to be an artist, you could go to one of those art schools/colleges things. I don't know much about them, so you'd have to do some research. It'd give you a lot of opportunities to sell your work in ways that you may not have been able to before, along with helping you improve your skills.

If you really just don't want any sort of college atmosphere, you could take up a job that you know will sustain you, and do your art on the side. Then, when your art rakes in enough money for you to live off of, you can quit the other job and just be an artist full time.

I feel you bro i feel you 100%.

I am in your exact situation..

Sucks ;-;

I used to feel like this but I never doubted going to college even if I wasn't sure exactly what I want to do. I think you should do some research and find some artistic careers you would want to do. Graphic designer and video game designer are great ideas. You just need to find something you really want to do and go for it. And like Think Pink said, it'd be a good idea to go to an art program or art college and you should do some research on them.

I am in the same boat as you, but I am going to attend college in the Fall. I agree with ThinkPink though, a high school diploma won't get you very far anymore. I don't know what I want to major in yet so I am going to start by taking my general education courses first. My piece of advise for you is not to stress about it because it doesn't help or change the situation. http://kh13.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/happy.png

I think you should try to find a major in something else you wouldn't mind working in along with minoring in art or maybe be a double major. Like you said, it's hard to be an artist so it's safest to have something else to fall back on. But college is a must since high school doesn't get you anywhere anymore.

Yes that's very true, and that's something that I've thought of before. the fact that a high school diploa doesn't get you that far. Yeah there's this woman I know who's daughter is going to an art college where most of the kids' hair is turquoise. But yeah, I should do more research, because maybe there's more places like this (its sounds like a very nice place, where the focus is art in the classroom and then everything else is done online and a little loose). Being 16 I feel like this is all coming up on me so fast.

IKR the woes of being an artist lmao :/

Thanks. I'm gonna do some research.

Hahah welcome to the boat :-) Heh, yeah I've definitely been stressing over this and you're right, it doesn't change anything and doesn't help me at all. Thank you, princess.

I understand where you're coming from, but I just can't imagine doing anything unrelated to art. The more I think about it, the more I realize there could be a lot of careers for me in art. While being an artist, I could be the manager or owner of a gallery, museum curator, art restorer, historian, you guys have really got me thinking.

tutti frutti. I say take your time to think about it. Much like what Think Pink had stated, college is becoming more of a necessity to survive after high school. I say at the very least, if you want to go to college, take some general courses at a community college that will help transfer to a four year college. This way, you have some extra time to think about what you want to do without feeling too much pressure. This way if you're unsure, you have something to fall back on if you feel you have to go to school for art, or whatever you want your major to be. I took a break between highschool and college to decide what I wanted to do before I went to college. Just be sure that you make sure it's what you want to do, and are determined to go through with it. A couple people tried talking me out of going to college.

I can tell you I know exactly how that is. I was in the same exact spot right out of high school wanting to do something with art but not really sure how to go about it. I went to a small community college in my town and took gen ed courses, and I am really glad I did that. All majors require gen eds so whatever you decide down the road those courses will apply to. I needed more time to learn who I am and what I can do, which sounds like you need to do to. I would have never have believed coming out of high school that I could be a translator. I didn't have any confidence in my language skills and knew no Japanese at the time. It took staying in college to learn that was the right path for me.

You may also want to look at other routes. There are also apprenticeship programs and certification that can help you with getting a job. But that's something you should go to after you're completely sure of what you want to do. I guess my main advice is to take gen eds (and try to take courses that you're interested in) and take them at a less expensive college. It will save you a lot of money and give you that extra time you need.

I know exactly whatcha mean I dont really have any plans either.
