Ansem (xehanorts heartless) traveled back in time to set young xehanort on the path he is on and then went to the point in time where destiny islands was destroyed in kh1. But my question is how the hell did he know what point in time to go to specifically? How did he know when to talk to sora and possess riku?

Xehanort is a very good planner, so it was most likely just part of his big plan.

From what I understand in time travel it only works one way, so he was going backwards from his point of origin and can travel to any time from that point, plus he was the one who opened the door to the heart of the world. So he knew when he planed to do that. Also I am guessing he went and learned exactly what Terra and Aqua and Ven did on there journey, and saw Terra pass on the Key to Riku.

So I guess if you can travel to any point in your past plan this huge blown up ordeal, and then got back to your own past when you were younger and give those plans to him, who from that point chose to move forward in time instead of back, you can make anything you want happen almost.

But there has been this wrench in his plan that he never counted on. Sora

Maybe he didn't get it right, and just kept retrying until he eventually said 'close enough'

what i dont get is why dont they just ruin the past. i mean ansem and everyone else can time travel right? so why dont they just do what they can do? and that is put a piece of xehanorts heart in young sora?

maybe because the present Sora is more useful

and it seems that nobody knows that Ven's heart is in Sora since the end of BbS => ~ 11 years now

so he could be useful when he was young, but like some of the Organisation members he was to weak ..maybe

Also you can't go somewhere in the past that you havent been to. And you can't change the timeline while there.

I've got another question. What was Sora's involvement in all this? Xehanort said he's planned on using Sora (14 year old) as a vessel or something since he saw him, but he's appeared to not have any plans with Sora until Dream Drop Distance. I know he was counting on Sora defeating his heartless and then his Nobody, but other than that? The most he did in their first meeting was possess Riku, and in their next, sabotage his Mark of Mastery exam. Doesn't seem very much like a Mastermind here.

maybe they knew they wouldn't be able to possess sora up until now, he's been through a lot since KH1 and now has stronger emotions and is more ready for them. in his dreams, they were hoping to be able to successfully manipulate him and maybe that would be the only way, seeing as sora is so strong willed. they would of gotten him as well but they didnt expect lea to get in the way of things x)
