Ok, here's brain teaser #1: Eight Pills

A total of eight pills are on a table. All have the same color and size. However, one is poisonous and weighs a fraction more than the others. A balance scale may be used only two times to determine the heavier pill. Seven of the pills must be eaten.

Why not eat them all?

I sorta remember hearing a brain teaser like this but all I remember is that the answer is really cool. I still doubt I'll be able to figure it out now haha.

The answer

 

Put 3 pills on each side. If they are the same weight, eat all 6. If they are not all the same weight, eat the 3 from the lighter side and the 2 left over.

 

You now have 2 or 3 pills left.

 

If you have 2 left, put one on each side and eat the the one from the lighter side.

 

If you have 3 left, put one on each side and eat the lighter one plus the one left over. If they are both the same weight, eat them both, and the one left over is the poisionous one.

 

 

The answer

Three cannibals and three missionaries must cross a crocodile infested river. They may use a small boat that can only hold two people. At no time may the cannibals outnumber the missionaries, but the missionaries may outnumber the cannibals. How can all six people by only using the boat get to the other side of the river? The boat can only be used once.

When you say outnumber you mean the number on the other side of the river?

What I mean is at no time can the cannibals outnumber the missionaries, in other words the cannibals cant eat the missionaries first.

I feel like I'm missing something...

But, couldn't one missionary take either a cannibal or a missionary to the other side, one by one?

You can only use the boat once

you have to use the boat more than once. it won't work any other way.

 

 

the first cannibal and the first missionary cross the river. cannibal 1 stays, missionary 1 goes back.

cannibals 2 and 3 cross, cannibal 2 stays, cannibal 3 goes back.

missionaries 1 and 2 cross, missionary 1 stays, missionary 2 and cannibal 2 come back.

missionaries 2 and 3 cross, both stay, cannibal 1 comes back.

cannibals 1 and 2 cross, cannibal 1 goes back and gets cannibal 3.
