For those who don't live in the United States...

Posted

...What are your stereotypes of Americans? I just get a bit curious after watching Hetalia.

For those who don't watch the show, America's portrayed as a food-obsessed man who always thinks that he's a hero. xD

I don't like MCDonalds,and I wouldn't go anywhere else,strangely I hate fast-food.That's one of the causes that people think I'm strange.

Most fast food's disgusting in my mind. xD I guess that I don't quite live up to American expectations, huh?

rofl, it seems plenty of thoughts against us americans around here. Sure we are fat, and selfish, and slobby, and obese in pride............where was I going with this? Crap...we suck x_x

No,we didn't mean anything like that, here in my country, most of people wanted to be americans.Even me,I want to go to the USA,but I have to finish school first. And,you know,it's getting dificult to the USA goverment let us in.

it's only like that because 3/4's of america is mostly like that. i rarely see any people that are vegetarians or aren't obese. /is offending.

And most americans .. seems to be racist.

to any country except their own .. O_o

yeah, but as I don't know any americans I have to keep my thoughts with me,that's just what I think

And most americans .. seems to be racist.

oh i definitely agree with that one. i think we even hate cuba right now because of hugo chavez.

I wouldn't hate any country, mostly it's not the normal people fault what they think about others,it's the society

hey, hey, hey, hey, hey now. My father is a vegetarian! My brothers and my sister are not obese (except for my mother and me) And its not as much of racism and not liking any other country as it is we just don't enjoy some things. Thenagain I wouldn't know, i'm not much for politics. All I know is theres something about oil, global warming and the death of all humanity. But thats just what i've heard.

i know xD which is why i said "rarely". there are still people that aren't obese and whatnot but the percentage of that is fairly low.

There's also that small percentage out there that are racist to themselves. /shot

You're kinda right. People categorize other people into stereotypes and what not for form an easier understanding of their world. It's just a matter of how people choose to assume what a person is like based on their culture or where they live. If they assume the worst, then they're bound to misjudge a character. Some societies as a whole take those assumptions to heart and shut people out and get the wrong idea of who people from other places really are.

We just judge without knowing, that a real problem

I suppose it all boils down to early humanity.

Different groups would act differently, and if someone from another clan comes near, members of the first clan would immediately become defensive and assume that the person would steal food or hurt their family.

Or, that's Coded reasoning at least. :P

This thread is really good. I've always been curious about other country's disposition to the U.S. And while not all of it is true, some parts are. Its kind of like (insert hated vegetable here), you don't like it neccessarily, but it's still good for you. (meaning Americans)

FROM an American, here's some genric feedback on some of the stereotypes.

They are all fat.

I'm pretty sure that America has the largest percent of obese people in it, but still, no one should paint everyone here with the same brush.

They are all ugly

I beg to differ. I've seen some pretty cute peope in my short time. Though I can't say I've had much reference for how hot other countries' people are. though if all I have to go on are some of the people on this site then i guess america is screwed, ha

Aaron's point about racism and contoversy

I am not racist. My community isn't either, we all treat it like a joke; we've got africans telling "black jokes" abd mexicans telling "mexican jokes" all the time. I haven't seen racism alot in my life. As for controversy, thats for people who have nothing better to discuss. If people are gonna take offense at what someone else does, GTFO of America. Its a free country, thats why people come here. Who cares if Tiger Woods slept with all those women? HE'S A GOLFER PEOPLE. Lets all grow up now.

Aaron's Point about Guns

Our bill of rights for our citizens gives us the right to bear arms. I have never seen anyone with a gun in their home, save for my grandpa's hunting rilfes, and I have never seen a gun fired, except for cross country, and those were blanks.

Laziness

Pnce again you can't classif everyone under the same term, I see about an equal amount of people who are lazy and those who aren't. Personally, I run miles daily in athletics, participate in Cross Country and Track, and I do not watch television. I know that sounds weird but I swear you guys I don't watch it cuz it's not interesting to me. I only occasionally watch an episode of 1000 ways to die or George Lopez when my sister begs me to. I haven't turned on a Tv for the purpose of watching it in years, and I am completely hopeless when my mom calls to ask me to record something for her, cuz I don't know how.

Stupid

I don't have much of any excuse for this. Even I am disgusted by how utterly stupid my classmates are. In America, you have a right to a good education, so people take it for granted. In poorer countries, the opportunity to get an education is a privilige; most kids I notice here think it's in the way.

Ignorant of other cultures

This is related to the above one; I think alot of people are not informed about other countries. The other day a kid walked in my class and told my teacher, "Hey, you know in Australia they have a cow farm as big as Texas?" Geez. Personally, I like knwing about life elsewhere, and I want to travel the world one day and learn about other cultures. =)

Politics, Government, E.t.c

America first formed their government after declaring independence from Great Britain. They called the king a tyrant and hated the monarchy. They were terrified to form a government that would hand one person too much power, and the first government they made, The Articles of Confederation, was actually too weak! The entire country flew into chaos. Finally, the Constitution was written, and I feel that it separates power nicely between branches of government. Unfortunately, that is not to say we have good people running it. There are people there that don't deserve their position and are corrupting some things. If you place a white rose into a vase that is filled with water colored with blue coloring, eventually the petals shall start to turn blue.

Obama

My opinion of Obama gets lower everyday. Though we can't judge his work until he does something, he won't be president, until he DOES something. He enticed the country with the one word everyone wanted to hear: change. And he was elected.

I tried not to bias my opinions on things, but there you have it from an American.

Its long isnt it, hahaha.

this isnt about truth, its about stereotypes. xD its not a dissection of every unique person, just the image to the rest of the world.

and ive met several americans that have guns in their homes. o.o that actually doesnt appear to be uncommon. xD

The average american family has not much security besides a little box and sign outside their door telling how high-tech they are to be. Whatever, my family wasn't the american kind of family you think, my heritage is on the REAL AMERICANS, Native Americans, American Indians. Were became slaves to these british and german and etc. Forced to have our blood mixed with theirs, our long hair which is our symbol of power was cut, our people dead from going from one resorvation to another with decreasing space for us. I may not look indian, but I am as prideful of that heritage as anyone else here. My blood is mixed, but my spirit is still the howl of the moon and the great wolf spirit of the Ani' Waya (Wolf Clan)

Did you know that US spent the most money on helath care per year than any other country but average life expectancy is ranked 27th in the world just saying http://ucatlas.ucsc.edu/spend.php

I blame it on Burger King. D:

If my country did just that. :(

I live in a little town in Canada right next to the border so I'm not a big fan of Americans, about once a month they'll have a jet pratice or something along those lines and they fly right over my town at like seven on a Sunday and wake everyone up. And I've been to the states many times and whenever I say I'm from Canada they start bugging me about saying eh alot and having a dumb accent and other crap like that it gets even worse when you say you're from B.C.

Oh my, looks like you had bumped into some rude americans then.

Yeah I think the ones I met were in like middle school or something like that if it makes any difference

I'm just going to say that it does. A lot of American middle schoolers I know don't have any sort of respect for other cultures...-_-'

Tell this for the students in my school, they don't have respect even for our culture,to say the others.

Not even for their own? What do you mean by that?
