The future of the Half-Life and Portal series

Posted

So, for a long while now, I haven't been able to get the whole Portal/Half-Life game story out of my head. The two tie in perfectly together, and take place at the same time. I have been a fan of Valve games for a long time, and I think they are amongst the greatest. Now, regarding the future of these two series...

SPOILERS

I think that the two series will tie in to make one game. I mean, What we know is that Aperture and Black Mesa are Rivals of a sort, and that they take place around the same time, so that leads to many questions, like how do we know that Chell wasn't attacked by Combines the moment she left Aperture, and all she had to defend herself was the companion cube? Also in Half-Life 2: Episode 2, we see that Freeman is off to go find the Borealis, which is an Aperture Science ship. What do you think he will find on that ship? Maybe a Portal Gun of some sort, or the means to create one... I know that Half-Life (most likely) takes place in Russia, and Portal Takes place in USA, but who knows? In Portal 2, you see the Dry dock that the Borealis was on, (You can conclude this by the names all around.) so we know that it has to be Canon. I think the two games will tie in, making them one in the same, completely ridding the "3" theory, and creating a new series, also ending at 2. Maybe they will do it like that so they can keep the running gag of "Valve cannot count to three" going... Anyways, that's just my rambling. What do you think?

I get your point and you have some good ideas, but I still don't want two great series combining. Mostly because of the fact that Half Life has serious and action filled story when Portal has more comical and not so serious story.

I see your point. Thanks for the feedback.

Since Portal 2 is it more like "a serious story told in a funny way" ;-)

But Valve can't count to three.

And yeah, Portal's story itself isn't comical, it's just that it's presented with lots of morbid jokes along with it,

It could work. It is hinted that both take place within the same timeline. GLaDOS tells you during the boss fight that she is "the only thing standing between us, and them." Them referring to the combine who might be trying to enter the facility.

Though, Portal 2 takes place at least 100 years later, I don't think it would take Gordon Freeman that long to drive the Combine out completely, but probably long enough for valve to make the game.

To be honest the story has been pretty serious with just humorous dialogue to make it less overwhelming. I mean seriously, GLaDOS did kill Aperture's top scientist and their daughters and subjected the survivors to brutal testing for her enjoyment.

I always thought it was about 20 years. We never know. After 100 years, I think they place may be much more decayed than it was. GLaDOS would probably be more rusted. I don't know. I think anytime really is possible, so we can't debunk the number of years just yet.

It's plausible, I personally doubt it though. This excerpt from the wiki explains possible time intervals. I doubt they would measure it in minutes though.

The span of time between Portal and Portal 2 is not entirely clear. During Portal 2's opening sequence, an automated 'Courtesy Call' implies that Test Subjects in stasis are revived every 50 days. However, when the player is next awakened, an autonomous P.A. system reports that the time elapsed is "99999...99...". It is unknown what unit of time this refers to. If this refers to 9,999,999 of some unit of time, it would most likely be days (because the automated message which played on Chell's initial revival stated that 50 days had passed). This means that, if at least 9,999,999 days have passed, more than 27,000 years have elapsed between Portal and Portal 2. However, if the unit was hours, then at least 1,140 years have passed. If the unit was minutes, then a minimum of 19 years would have passed. Of course, it is entirely possible that the system has completely broken down and is no longer capable of accurately tracking time. Regardless, enough time had to pass for the facility to become dilapidated and overgrown with plant life.

True, True. I guess we won't really know until the next Half-Life or (maybe) Portal game.
