Any advice on getting rid of artist block?

Posted

Numerous times have I felt like I just don't want to draw, even if I try to. To get this out of the way right now, it isn't because I don't like drawing (as someone has suggested this before, and that is definitely not the reason), and in fact I've taken several classes to improve my skills. I've improved greatly over the years, at least better than when I first started.

Art block, however, is keeping me from improving. I seem to only bring out one decent picture every month or so, with the random jolt of motivation that comes as quickly as it goes, even before I can prepare myself. I want to draw, but I seem to not have the motivation I need. I go to draw with the thought of "Yeah! I'm gonna make this really cool picture!" and then a minute later I go "Nah, I don't feel like it anymore."

I have no idea what the problem is, and it bugs me to no end. I just want to be able to draw without a second thought.

that happens to me too. i've heard that a way to get rid of this is to look at different images that might give you inspiration or just draw whatever comes to your mind while you're fully relaxed

You have no idea how much I feel that feel, and how much it irritates me.  I've been traumatized away from art after getting low grades in art classes (it's also the incident that compelled me to change majors), and since then--which is about three years now--I've been able to count on one hand how much artwork I've been able to show to the public.  One of them was a gift for a friend.  The rest are all avatars, for myself or someone else.  I work below a snail's pace when I do artwork now because I always want to produce something that won't embarrass me.  Bad thing is, I usually fail at it.  I'm so methodical and I'm such a perfectionist that it's become counterproductive and now I can't do anything.  Even if I want to draw something, I get discouraged and scrap it altogether, because for me and art, it's better to have nothing than to produce something horrid my name will be attached to.  I don't want to go through that again.

That happens to me when I try to write.

Hmmmm, watch/listen/do things that inspire you :P

I always just took a break for a while and watched lots of media to get inspired.

try different styles and draw things you wouldn't normally draw. Maybe get some motivation by looking at other artists draw, that helps me!

I feel this way all the time. But what has helped me recently is I take a look at my old drawings from the past and think to myself, "look how much I've improved since then. And if I keep practicing, soon I'll be even better than I am now." And I say the same thing to myself constantly.

If artist's block is anything like writer's block, maybe you need to find some inspiration.  For example, I'll be utterly stuck on a story I'm trying to write, but watching an amazing TV series suddenly fills me with ideas.  Or finishing a video game brings on more, and I suddenly feel the urge to write.  Again, I don't know if drawing is anything like writing, but it seems like a similar concept.  If it is, it's just something you can't force on, unfortunately.  Or, actually you can force it, but nothing forced looks or sounds good, y'know?

Sorry I couldn't offer better advice!  I wish you the best of luck in working past your artist's block!  Maybe try looking at various artwork masterpieces, or (seriously, not kidding) watch some movies that contain artists?  Sometimes when I see someone doing something in a film it'll intrigue me to want to do the same.  Just an idea, anyway...

Mm I usually just force myself to draw.

But when I really am just unmotivated I'll take a break and play games.
