What if, as per Sora's example in KH1, one of the lights decide to just sort of... sacrifice themselves prior to the event, thus making it so the melding of hearts can't occur?

 

What kind of a hitch would that throw in the grand scheme?

Yeah, I'm with Xaon, another light might just pop up.  If the battle between the seven lights and thirteen darkness is destined (and Xehanort wasn't full of crap when he said it), I can assume fate is flexible enough to account for things like sacrifice... or even natural causes like sickness and old age, if the battle is put off long enough.  I don't think the battle has to be between specific people, at a specific time or place.  I think as long as it happens at all, it's destiny.

Yeah, it might put it off, but it won't get rid of the problem.

 

Ventus already sorta did that, and Nomura probably won't repeat the plot too much...?

If you haven't seen it yet, watch the secret video for KH3D. It pretty much explains why of them sacrificing themselves or just avoiding confrontation altogether won't work.

First off, MX stated all the lights are chosen naturally so if one was destroyed another would take his/ her place. Secondly, MX could also use any of the 7 POH as well for this. He doesn't neccessarily need to use 7 wielders. Heck Nomura even hinted Donald and Goofy could be a light too .

Not if he decides to target the 7 PoH instead.

Regardless, another light would be summoned because the battle has to take place, if they ignore him they'd simply start terrorizing innocents until they had to take action.  There's also a large number of spare keyblader wielders.
