Replaying the game made me realize a lot of awesome things about this. For it saving Square so long ago, it's actually underrated to me.

The characters I think were the only problem (at least the silent protagonists) but the gameplay was smooth and easy to learn.

The story seems pretty unoriginal and cliche, but as far as I can tell, this game was old enough to START the cliche, which it might have. Either way, the story's interesting and great.

The music is wonderful (Although the original had few music selections)

The world is pretty large for its time and required navigation

You can never forget the originals. FF1 was great.

Does this actually happen?! lool

The only reason why the storyline is so nonexistant was because it was Squaresoft's last bastion before bankruptcy, so it was pretty much a "firetruck it, we need to make a game" decision since it could have been their final fantasy (game). Same reason why a bunch of the enemies were ripped pretty much straight from Dungeons & Dragons; when you're desperate for sales, you gotta focus on the gameplay. Also, technically Dragon Quest started the standard RPG game cliches (or games like Wizardry if you *really* want to go old-school), but that's another story. But yeah, it kind of sucks how the gameplay hasn't aged well due to being really slow (and bullcrap like magic tiers having their own MP or hits weren't auto-targeted if an enemy was knocked out before the turn ended), but at least we have the remakes to make up for that. Also, dat Chaos Temple music, especially the Origins version. nnnngggghhhhhhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iLJffGn9ZE

I like the first game especially.

Every other Final Fantasy game hands you the characters and their stories, but the first game leaves it completely open to you.  It is special to me in that way, because you literally get to insert yourself and fill in the blanks. There's a lot of freedom in that sort of game, and that really is what made the ending so beautiful.

One of the things that I love about the first game is how the characters are distinctly yours, and the little feats that you accomplish really stand out.

Like when my underleveled party ran into a Green Ogre for the first time, and three of the party were down, but the Fighter managed to just hold on long enough to take the guy down all on his own. It meant just a little more than usual, because this wasn't just any Fighter; this was my Fighter, and his accomplishments were mine.

The story is there, but the trick is to remember: it's your story.

It's possible, since this was in another game:
